Answering machine messages, wife's name before husband's?

Is there a preferred order to this?

  • ZOMG!!! You should assume stance of dominance!

  • Meh, doesn't matter

  • I always dominate my hand (for you unattached members)

So, I'm listening to our answering machine message my wife recorded and I realized she puts her name first, mine second, and our son's name last.

Issue or non-issue?

I'm sure this will make for some interesting conversation. Personally, I don't give a shit. She did take my last name when we married after all. :p

Update: I brought it up to my wife tonight and after we stopped laughing she said, "hold on a second, I'm pretty sure I said your name first." Sure enough, we went and played it and she was right. It was early this morning, I'm getting over a cold and I was half listening to it while pouring my first cup of coffee... and it has been the same message for the last 8 years.

BTW-She liked PingSpike's response to this thread. :p

My wife PWNED me. :D

If you don't give a shit, why did you make a thread on it...?

Seems like it does matter to you. :p

Redo it with your and your sons name. Leave her out and show her who is boss.

Hello, you've reached the Maximus residence. I'm sorry there's no one here to take your call, but if you leave your name and number, we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

I think you should bring it up because I want to hear about how she changed it later to be Asshole, Asshole's wife and Asshole Junior. :D

I think she probably just put her name first because she was the one recording the message. Seems logical to me.

It actually goes like this, "Hello, you've reached the Maximus residence, Mrs Jules, Jules, and Little Jules Maximus, we aren't here to take your call so please leave your name and number and we'll get back to you."

Who has the name with less syllables? I've found that most people tend to have the name with the least sylllables first, followed by the longer ones. Men tend to have shorter names/than men and they just naturally go first.

I'd delete the particulars. It's a minor security risk to detail the occupants of the house, and keeping things broad and generic prevents bruised egos.

I would use a random number generator to decide whose name will go first. This approach avoids debates and arguments...

people know they're calling a member of your family, if they got the wrong number, they'll stop at maximus. Those who got the right number though, probably don't want to listen to the whole thing since they know the number is right, so I'd cut it down like this:
"Hello, this is the answering machine of the Maximus residence, please leave your name and number and we'll get back to you."

same for me. my wifes name went first because it sounds better than mine first. some combos just sound right one way or the other. i never thought about the syllable thing, but it works in my case. mine is 2, hers is 1.
