Furthermore, halogen headlights & foglights, the other modern vehicle lighting fad = extremely dangerous, should be illegal.

For all the whining about foglights and bright headlights, the ONLY times I'm ever bothered is when someone has their highbeams on. Foglights don't bother me so long as they are properly aimed.

Pretty much the same for me. I do have a HUGE beef with the fogs on Explorers & Ford Rangers. 1) the fogs are as big, if not bigger than the regular lamps, and 2) they are aimed right at your face in a sedan. Not an when they are behind you, but it's blinding when they are coming at you.

I was against DRLs when they 1st came out and I vowed never to purchase a vehicle with said equipment. In my latter years, I've learned that most people suck at defensive driving and government sponsored automotive safety IS a good thing. DRLs are good for drivers that do not turn on their headlights during adverse driving conditions; snow, rain, fog, etc. DRLs were made out to be evil because of increased battery/alternator drain and headlamp replacement. I vote for DRLs slightly for the positive effects; I can foot the extra cost if it prevents even one idiot from running into me.

That was a very ignorant and downright stupid comment. And that car sounds exceedingly American - it's built with features that allow people to be lazy!

Oh, and stay out of my way, that is, assuming you have enough braincells to detect the 4 headlights, 6 roof running lights, drain cap running lights, floorboard running lights and grille lights on my van. If not - well, I suppose you deserve my psuedo-chrome bumper in your face.

No not american Swedish I think all the SAAB 900 work had that feature lets see you find an american car that old smart enough to turn the damn light off when most people would want the lights off.

Isn't SAAB owned by GM?

At any rate, many, many cars, including American cars have automatic headlights. They've been popular for years.

damn, that page is foul!! they should reduce the brightness of that yellow by 70%, but just like the 70% reduced highbeams, it'll still give me a headache!!

as for gm's effort for the drl, in words of wojo (local sports talk guy) GIMMICK!!!! GIMMMMMMICK!!! i still remember the dumb saturn commercial that had everyone in it say, "hey your lights are on" yes, they attract attention, but is it safer? has anyone heard of target fixation? too much attention may not be a good thing. not to mention dumb.. *sigh*

and if all gm cars have dlrs, how come on the vettes, there's an option to turn them off? cuz no one driving a vette would want to look like a total geek citing canada's studies on fog driving safety stats.. as a lame ass excuse on why they have their stupid lights on during the day.

The real question is why did DRLs show up in the US.....they aren't required by the gov't to be put on cars. In essence it was an economic decision. Canada requires DRLs, the US doesn't. It ws cheaper to build cars with DRLs for both markets instead of buiilding them with DRLs for Canada and without for the US market, especially since a lot of GM vehicles are assembled in Canada. (GM was the first to "introduce" DRLs to the US market.)

Is now but SAAb had them at least 15 years ago.

Edit: And Saab has been own by GM for only five or six years.
