if cylinders are misfiring, is there any way a layman like me can fix? or should I hand it over to a mechanic?

also, in a recent visit to a mechanic he said my Fuel Injectors need to be cleaned. Now what the service cover? Do they remove the injectors are brush it or soak it with some liquid? The cost was 50 bucks.

oh, btw, if QuitBanningMe is reading this, I highly appreciate your link to the Toyota's Emission Analysis, it bought some detail insights on SMOG gas diagnostic.

What you as a layman can fix or test that would result in a misfire:

timing
plug gap
distributor cap
plug wires (make sure they aren't "leaking")
coil
fuel filter
vacuum leaks
idle speed
low compression
EGR

As far as the cleaning of the injectors throw some injector cleaner in the tank go out on the highway and accelerate hard a few times.

You won't really be able to clean the injectors outside of the car without special equipment. A mechanic will use this or they will leave the injectors in and hook up directly to the fuel lines on the motor and spray cleaner through.

Injector problems can also be because of a faulty control computer.

how old is the car? it could be due for new wires, plugs and a distributor cap (if it has a distributor - I know there are other ways of doing it).

I replace (and checked), plug gap, distri cap, plug wires (leaking? how?
but I don't know how to fix timing, compression. :(

Leaking meaning crossfire.

Timing varies slightly. Generally there will be a notch on the harmonic balancer and a peice with timing marks bolted/made into the timing case. It will have "teeth" ^^^^^ each of which represents a certain time. One is usually marked with a 0. When the notch on the balancer is lined with this mark the number one cylinder is at top dead center.

To check the timing you need to know the timing spec like "10 degrees before top dead center. Once you know this put a spec of white paint on the notch on the balancer and a speck on the correct "tooth" on the timing guide. Hook up the timing light and point it at the balancer. Move the distributor/ CAS until the marks line up.

If the distributor has a vacuum advance this should be disconnected and the vacuum line plugged while setting the timing.

Compression is tested with a tool that screws into the spark plug hole. The engine is turned and you measure on the compression stroke of each cylinder.

If the mechanic says it is the injectors I would clean/ replace them.
