my sons computer is having problems. It can see the router but cant send info to it or it has limited connectability.

Once at the desktop if you try to get on the net it will time out. I can see my Belkin router and in a command box I can Ping Yahoo and google and get a ping time back.

I have three other computers connected wirelessly right now and did IP config in each of them they all are working great. My sons on a IP config has the same Ip listed but one line at the bottom saying

Ethernet adapter local area connection media state......... media disconnected.

I tried a system restore no luck. Called Belkin and talked to the tech and he says I have some kind of firewall preventing it from working. I just dont see it. We went through a bunch of the settings with him but no luck told me the wireless card is working fine.. .

Running XP pro SP2

Any ideas?

Still trying to fix this. I can see several wireless networks and can connect to them but when I open IE explorer it hangs.. Firefox hangs.

Could this be some sort of a virus?

so the wireless card connects to the network, and gets a valid IP....

ipconfig /all

it has valid DNS servers, right?

open a command window, type in "nslookup" then "server 4.2.2.1" then "www.google.com"

if those all work, then exit out of nslookup and try and ping that IP.

I ran this a while ago with no luck.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

For these commands, Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Does sound like your stack is hosed. Follow the links in Jack's post.

one way to test overall connectivity is to "ping www.google.com -t". That will be continuous ping. If that works then try "telnet www.google.com 80", type GET. You should get something back, if not a firewall or something else is blocking it.

This sounds more like name server then TCP/IP stack....

He is pointing to 192.168.2.1 for DNS, and as nslookup stated, it's not responding (forwarding). When changing to 4.2.2.1, he can resolve www.google.com

OP, I would try setting a static DNS server of 4.2.2.1 and see if the problem goes away. You can do that in control panel->network connections->Adapter->TCP/IP properties.

Ok did that and can get some net connection after booting. Web page will take several minutes to load.. Clicked on Windows update and IE explorer crashed hard??? Tried to update adaware but it just looked at me. Windows defender did update over about a half hour.

Format/Repair.

Boot from the XP original CD. Skip the first screen that offer Console Repair, and continue as though you install a New XP. After you Agree etc., the new install screen will come on and would have an option to detect old XP installation and Repair it. P
Press R for Repair.

Use it would take about 45Min. and you would have a Refresh Installation of XP while keeping all your data and XP configuration.

You might need to reactivate Windows, and very thing is Kosher it not a problem.
