another win2k prob on my friends new system

My friend just built a new comp, installed windows 2000, and everything worked fine. he tried to install Service pack 2. The installation seemed to work until he restarted.

A BSOD appeared saying:

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer.
check for virii, remove and new hdd or hdd controllers, check hard drive for errors, run chkdsk /f to check for corruption, then restart.

we restarted and got the BSOD again :-(

any suggestions>? here are his specs:

AMD 1.2 GHZ
ABIT KT7A (VIA)
GF2 Ultra
512 megs of ram
Aureal Vortex Soundcard

umm... you omitted the first few lines of the BSOD from your post, which explain WHY the screen appeared in the first place
