Another which video card to get question

Well, I aksed this before (Radeon 9200 vs. FX 5200), but my parents offered to help, so now I'll spend a bit more and get a card that might last.
So...
1. 9600 Pro 128MB $159/$149/$179 (Newegg), and just OC the thing. OOS Sapphire w/ heatpipe ($179, expected tomorrow) looks nice.
2. Powercolor 9800SE 128MB $185, chance it having 8 perfectly good pipelines (AccuPC).
3. Radeon 9800np, if anyone knows a place to get them now for $200.

9800np should be your first choice definitely. If you can't get it, get a 9600pro. I wouldn't bother with a 9800se. And if you can't get a 9800np, then you might consider a fx5900 if you don't mind an nvidia card.

My 5900 runs great, i would get next deal under 190 that i see for it, but watch out for the 2.2 version, some now have 2.8ns, which means it won't overclock good, i was one of first to get the XFX5900nu, from a deal that was only 177AMIR and it can overclock alot, but i don't need it to until HL2 prolly, i would get 5900nu, it can run opengl better then 9800np

Yeah, check the memory on whatever card you get. Many companies sell cards with memory 25% slower or worse. Like a 5900np with 600mhz memory instead of 850.

Are those CC deals with MIR or straight up $200? If straight up, and the memory is correct, get the 9800np. If no I'd get the 5900np.

Not being able to play any non-quicktime video since the Macrovision-policed dets came out, I'm quite in favor of ATi.

I realize the 9800np is a great card, but I have $240 total, so even with the early Christmas gift help, that leaves me close to broke (College student, so no suprise there, right?), unless I can get it for $200, at which point it will be an amazing buy. Thing is, I've been unable to decide which to get (9600 Pro or 9800 SE) if I can't find one, now that I see a few people are even now able to get them for $200 at B&M stores. Will check BB & CC tomorrow. Thanks all.

I've looked at all the CCs and BBs around here in KC to get a 9800 np that i could flash up to a pro ... nothing. The only place i can find them, they are just barely below the prices for the 9800 pros. So if you can find one cheap enough, jump on it. Otherwise, i as well, would suggest you look at the FX5900 as a solid top tier level card for a middle ranged price.

no the difference between the 9800np and SE is day and night.the SE peforms as much as a 9600 or in some cases as much as a 9600 pro.

9800 then overclock or else get the 9600 XT for the bigger heatsink and low power core - better for overclocking than the Pro version.
