Another "what mobo should I get?" request.

Ok, looking to piece together a new system, as I am currently back in the socket A days still. Trouble is it was less than a year ago that I forked out big dollars for my 9800XT and I really dont feel like getting a new video card.

Looking around all the recomendations seem to be NF 4 chipsets....of coarse this is no good.

I will be looking to get a 3000+ 939 venice core - a gig of platinum OCZ and have a bit of overclocking fun....so the question is, "What board do you suggest?"

Upon browsing the local computer stores price list the one that jumps out is the Abit AV8-3rd Eye (whatever the hell the 3rd eye bit is about) but that is mainly because of Abit's reputation for good quality boards and good overclocking potential.

Anyone care to share any insights on this board or other potential recommendations?

My MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum is an EXCELLENT mobo. I got my Winne 3200+ up to 2.65GHz back in March, but now that the hot weather has settled in here in Arizona, I've had to bring it down a notch to 2.55GHz. Still an excellent OC, and it supports the latest X2 procs as well as the FX-57! That just seals the deal in my book, for an AGP mobo ;) .

trouble is in my part of the world the msi is $200 (australian dollars) going against the Abit which is $140

A new contender for my attentions though is the DFI Lanparty NF3 Ultra @ $160

More I think about it the more I'm tending towards the latter....DFI and Abit are both known for their ability in overclocking but the DFI has the wood over the AV8 in terms of features, it is based on a Nvidia chipset (which I prefer to Via) and it allows for a VDIMM of 3.2 against the Abit's piddly 2.8

Anyone have any opinons on the DFI?

DFI NF3 Ultra is also an excellent mobo, as I recall, not quite as stellar as the neo2 plat but definitely up there. You can also look for the neo2-F if you're looking to save $, same thing as the platinum without firewire.

no, the DFI NF3 939 mobo is a peice of junk, riddled with problems, buy if you dare

one that hasn't been mentioned in the Epox 9nda3+, which is as good or better than the MSI, get the 9nda3j (only difference is no firewire and 2 SATA channels, but you only lose the 2 UNLOCKED SATA channels from the 9nda3+, so they are basically useless if you are overclocking, hence the only real difference becomes no on-board firewire) Oh and it doesn't come with as many accessories. The price difference is as much as $20, so I'd go for the 9nda3j, I think its like $89-91 shipped.

You might also consider the "ASrock 939Dual-SATA2 (ULi M1695) Mainboard":

Also, Anandtech had a very positive review of a prototype ULi-chipset board, several weeks ago.

Thanks all for the opinons

Not sure I could live with a relative no-name like Asrock and I do need firewire (though I suppose a PCI card could be bought). And for 33% more dollars than the Abit the MSI seems a touch overpriced to me.

Ahhhh decisions, decisions

is the DFI really that bad? (I have to say it is still top spot in my prefrences)
