another weird HD problem.

Ok, I've been playing with computer for some years now and this is first time that really made me scratch my head.

one hard drive not booting up XP

symptom
- Windows tries to boot, says it's missing c_1252.nls file
- tried to safeboot, says same thing

now the weird part is, I tried to go to recovery console by booting with XP cd. and it says C:\ where windows lies is 100% free; meaning there's nothing on the HD.

can it be? I mean I can press f8 and safe menu comes up, some file, at least ten files should reside on the C:\ .. but it's 100% free.

since XP setup sees no XP installed on the HD, I can't get to recovery console... this is end of my intelligence and I'm turning to nice AT forum brains 😀

help would be really appreciated.

did you run any clean up programs before this happened. i did that with Norton on an old gateway and did what it said and it wiped my system clean. had to reformat the drive because Go Back, Gateways system restore, said there was nowhere to go back too! yeah i can laugh now and since then have built my own PC and i dont use any Norton products lol.

Things that I'll do.

1. backup files from the HD to another spare HD.
2. wipe the MBR and also do a DISKWIPE (zero out the HD) with gdisk
3. reinstall OS. If same problem persists, it could be the HD, RAM or MB.
