Alright I have been going to the gym for about two weeks now. I was really slacking during the summer. Currently 5'11 @ 170. Whats better? Lifting a specific amount of weight x amount of times unttil you cant lift it anymore? or increase after each set? I guess im trying to tone more than bulk.

you should try to lift a specific weight between 10-12 times. if you can do more then you need to increase the weight. if you can only do less than 10 then you need to lower the weight.

do fewer reps for bulk(at higher weight).

Yeah, blackdogdeek is right. High reps at low weight=more muscle tone. Low reps at high weight=more bulk.

I myself shoot for 4-6 reps if I'm going heavy, 6-8 otherwise.

to get tone, high reps less weight
for bulk/mass, low reps heavy weight

I usually do heavy sets (8,6,4 reps) but sometimes to change it up I lower the weight and do something like 10 sets of 10

I'd start with 3 sets of 10 of whatever you can do 10 of, then when you start to like the amount of bulk you have, keep the same weight and build up reps to ~15.

Why are people so moronic and polar when it comes to politics? Do we forget that our ideals are actually very closely aligned?

Hankerton,

Your sig is unpatriotic and disrepectful, IMO. Respect isn't all that important these days though.

This is a great site. It scales from ultra newb to pretty hardcore. Lots of good fitness basics there. And honestly once you figure out at least a little bit of what you're doing in the gym, diet is more than half the challenge. The gym is the easy part. :)
