I used to upgrade whenever a new platform came out. Always had to have the latest stuff for years. It was very expensive. After a while, I got tired of being a free (for the manufacturer) beta tester and trying to sort out buggy stuff.
I have not upgraded my basic platform (except video cards) for four years now. I'm dying to pull the trigger on an I7 / X58 / a gazillion gig of ram platform.
I'm currently still running an Opty 165 @ 2.6ghz on an EVGA NF-41 SLImb and a gig of OCZ pc3700 Gold Rev.3 ram. I run liquid cooling in a dinosaur Antec SX830 case with an OCZ 600w ps and four 80mm case fans and a Thermaltake 120 for the rad. It's basically my Half Life box and with my GTX 260, runs everything just fine w/ XP Pro SP3.
I've got the itch but unfortunately, due to the economy, I'm thinking maybe an Intel dual core e5200 on a gigbyte EP45 mb and 4 gig of GSkill 8500 (1066) ram. I'll keep the rest (gtx 260, liquid cooling, case, ps, etc.) I'll pay $240.00 up front and maybe sell my 939 stuff for $90.00. I hear those E5200 can go 3.5 ghz or above on air.
Question: Is it worth the upgrade? I didn't go Vista but plan on going with 7.
