kinda sucks, I have never had to take an antibiotic for anything and it is all those people who take them for every little sniffle that may end up killing someone who took them only for emergencies, yay america once again.

It's not even just that - in hospitals, the waste systems are filled with antibiotics since they are flushed out of people's systems, so you get stuff growing in the sewer systems that become antibiotic resistant, seen in areas with poor sewage treatment (ie: drug-resistant cholera).

Or people taking antibiotics till they feel better instead of taking them for the required amount of time.

MRSA is making it's way out of the hospitals/nursing homes/prisons and into society. Scary stuff.

SI or Men's Health or somebody had an article on it maybe two years back. Apparently it appears with some regularity (not epidemic, but more often than random occurences) locker rooms, particulary those where lots of equipment (football, hockey) stews in its own filth for a periods of time. Same for gyms, where countless people touch barbells and dumbells and drip bodily fluids. It was a nerve-inducing piece...made me very careful about washing my hands thoroughly after every workout.

ya, a lot of wrestlers and mixed martial artists catch it from rolling on the mats. scary stuff as it can spread throughout the entire gym population pretty quickly.

staph infections have been around a while. this isn't a new problem; but it's good to see the general public is finally becoming aware of it.

I had an antibiotic resistant infection in my elbow a couple years ago - That was the 3rd time in 20 years at one job and 7 years teaching that I had to take sick time. (1st and only time I've missed a day of teaching; I took a 1/2 day personal day for my wife's college graduation.)

For what it's worth, it's not just people using antibiotics that are causing the resistant strains. The agricultural industry is largely to blame for massive use of antibiotics in cattle and chickens.

I had a staph infection in my lower leg several years ago. It was nearly impossible to get rid of. I probably consumed $30,000 worth of antibiotics. 18 mos. later it finally healed.
