Another "terrible performance with UT and Win2k" thread

Here's what I did... I upgraded from Win98SE to Win2k (not a clean install, an upgrade). Then I installed the latest drivers for my video card and my sound card. I then upgraded to DirectX 8.0. Finally I installed Unreal Tournament. I ran UT expecting a performance hit, but this was ridiculous. I couldn't even get a decent frame rate when I ran it at 640x480 with everything in low detail. What gives???

Were you using D3D or OpenGL? If you use D3D, you should see a better improvement. I have a TNT3 Ultra 32 and I can run it at 800x600 using D3D just fine.

Also, are you using the Dentonator 2 or 3 drivers from NVidia?

I'm using D3D drivers. The display is really messed up with letters missing all over the place. Also I'm not able to see my mouse pointer. I really don't know what's going on. Could it be the drivers for the motherboard??? I'm using detonator 3 reference drivers from Nvidia.

I have made some progress with regard to fixing my Win 2k/UT problems.

Currently i am running the 5.16 drivers and latest via patch. I also d/l the via cpu fix from Windows update. The end result is bearable UT performance (about 30% faster than i was getting with 6.47 drivers). Something is still wrong with my system, but as least its playable now

My advice is to play around with heaps of drivers and see if any help. I think much of the problem is UT/Direct X related and may require a patch.

also check the tweak guides at...

dude
DUDE
DUDE!!!

Read the UT tweaking guide i linked to above. D/l The new Open GL driver and give it a try.
I just used it and....

The image quality was much better- some slight visual fluctuations, but very very crisp
My max frame rates went from about 60- about 110
My min frame rates went from about 11 - about 40

I am very very happy.

Only been using this for 10 minutes, so i havent tested it much. But i had to come back and advise you to try it.

Crap: I think that patch is for Geforce only. Sorry to get your hopes up

Tell me how it goes. If ya want, i can email the open gl driver.

A friend tried it on his TNT@ Ultra and it worked fine, so it has to be worth a try

I have a TNT2 Ultra, not a TNT3. That was a typo. I have read that using the Det3 drivers with a TNT2 or lower GPU has problems and has a drastic performance decrease as apposed to the Det2 drivers. I have a PII 400 128MB TNT2 32MB Ultra, and I can get some good FRs.
