moving from xp to ubuntu...

does steam still work, if not what's the replacement, and can i still play the games on that?

If you're going to play PC games you're going to be much better off doing a dual boot of XP/Ubuntu and using XP for gaming.
 
Steam (from what I understand) does not work with Linux and last I checked didn't work with Wine either. I'd stick with a dual-boot for gaming. Personally I'm not a fan of linux as a desktop as a server hell yes but for general usage I find it lacking mostly do to lack of well polished software.
