I live in Berkeley, California. It's arguably one of the most liberal cities in the US. The 60's never ended here. We have Rent control laws, liberal cops, lots of social services for people who aren't doing so well for one reason or another, etc. If you think you know what "PC" is, come check this place out. Diversity isn't just celebrated, it's mandatory.It's very "Culturally Sensitive", if you know what I mean.
Anyway, to make a short story long, the owners of my building are Indian immigrants. They're Hindus. Not only that, they look it. They're good people. The ten year-old, Dhian, is a typical Ameircan kid, in that he loves video games, and The Rock. I've been letting him borrow tapes. The grandmother cooked us dinner a few nights back, after I mentioned in passing that I loved Tandoori Chicken. She whipped us up a batch of that, plus some fresh Naan. In short, these people are the coolest landlords I've ever had in 8 years at the Apartment game.
When I got home from work today, something was missing. Their hair. Every male member of the family had cut off the long hair that I was under the impression was required by their beliefs.
Why?
Take a guess.
Bingo.
Even in Berkeley, people are still backward, simpleminded, and stupid. Even in "Tolerant" Berkeley, people still act like the backwoods hicks that tried to beat me and my friends up for saying, way back when, that the Gulf War wasn't everything we were being told. I remember the "Kick Their Ass-Take Their Gas" shirts, and the rampant anti-Arab sentiment that we encouraged in order to get that one done. Stories like that are starting to start up again. Doom posted last night about an incident in Houston, and we all know about the guy in Mesa. The Mosque in Berkeley, as well as one in Oakland, have closed after being vandalized. How long is it gonna be before everyone of South Asian descent has a target on their backs?
Please, everyone. Think really hard about what's about to happen in the next couple of days here. While you're at it, think about the consequences of an open-ended "War On Terrorism". Ask yourself if this is all really being done in "Your" name.
