First Elijah Wood hinted at this (accidentally) and now from Dark Horizons:

LOTR: The Return of the King: 'Starjay' has an update on the third film, its reshoots and some FX difficulties: "ROTK is suppose to run in the 3.5-4 hour range, P.J. can use as much time as he needs to finish the story. Most of the actors will be returning to New Zealand for reshoots before the ROTK release. There were two other film crews that were filming other than P.J. and Barry Osbourne/Fran Walsh and P.J. was allegedly very disappointed with the direction and the acting. All of these scenes will be reshot, and the director has a lot of work to do before the release. I was told that the battle scenes for ROTK would be much more difficult this time, as opposed to Helm's Deep. HD was easy due to the darkness and the rain, it hides a lot of sins. The Battle of Pelannor Fields and the stand at the Black Gate won't be in the dark although it's not completely daylight either".

HOLY CRAP!....I'm drooling at the thought of a 4.5 hour Extended Edition. And damn are they ever gonna be working their asses off to finish up all this stuff, especially with all those reshoots to correct the errors by the other film crews. I'm betting they'll hire a ton more peolpe to work on it so they can get it out the door by the end of the year. New Line won't give second thought to pumping in millions more.

And if this is true, god bless New Line for letting them play off the success of the first two films and release the 4 hour version to theaters. More time = less showings, possibly less money.

ROTK will be the greatest film of all time.

Good. FOTR and TTT were (IMO) way too compressed. I wouldn't mind if it ran for 8 hours as long as they kept it truer to the book (and had an intermission or 2 ;) ).

Damn...

Lord of the Rings could have easily been broken into six 2-hour movies. I'm still amazed at how much was left out of the Two Towers and it still runs 3 hours!

Well, they cut a lot out of TTT, but they also added a lot of crap as well. I think they could have cut a lot of the crap about Arwen and Eowyn and Aragorn, and a good deal of Helmsdeep in favor of staying more true to the plot. OTOH, I thought they were trying to keep it under the psychological barrier of 3 hours. Why was TTT confined to 3 hours and ROTK not?

To hell with moviegoers that cannot hold their bladders for eight hours or more, this is going to kick arse! :D

Maybe because New Line is so pleased with the profits they figure they can get away with RoTK being 3.5-4 hours long and still make at least $250 million.

I doubt they'll go over 3.5 hrs. True, New Line is already rolling in the dough from this project but I still can't see them throwing away future profits...*unless* they think the extra footage is necessary to put ROTK in prime position for the BP oscar. Maybe that would mean more to them at this point than cash, I don't know.

they should make it like a play or opera and have a 15 min intermission after two hours or so.

Well after FOTR and TTT they'll make close to 2 billion in the box office world wide....I'm sure they would be willing to sacrifice a hundred million or so. Even if it is long, and can be showed less, who is to say the same amount of people still won't go?
If ROTK wins Best Picture, that'll give it another little boost at the BO that could make up for it too.

I wouldn't really underestimate New Line...they were the only studio with the balls to take on this project and fund it. If LOTR failed, New Line would have been toast. I'm sure they got the balls to put out a 3.5-4 hour film. w00t! :D

And yeah, if it was 4 hours long...I think they would definitely need to put a 10-15 minute intermission so people can use the can, have a stretch, or go have a smoke if need be.

Yup, just like the extended edition of FOTR was supposed to be 5 hrs long.

And the theatrical release of TTT was supposed to be 3 1/2 hrs long.

ROTK will be no longer than 3.5 hrs at the most. I'm thinking 3:15.

Great. I'm gonna need a cathoder to watch this one if they don't give us a friggin intermission. I love these movies, but having to go 4 hours after just eating a meal (which is what I assume most people do right before going to the movies) is asking a lot.
