Rent a friend. So we've reached this point now where despite the prevalence of social networking websites, our lives have become so empty that friends can now be "rented". I think it's safe to assume that people using this service have at least tried facebook/myspace and haven't gotten anything out of it in terms of meaningful relationships/friendships. So they resort to this. Paid friends.

Or maybe it's an indictment of social networking as an ultimately insubstantial, albeit ubiquitous phenomenon.

On the positive side, this means that all of ATOT can now have friends outside of SimCity and WoW. :p

I could see this as a useful service if you are visiting a big city and you are looking for a friend to show you the area. But they could easily screw you over as they are also a stranger. I think I would rather be lonely than rent-a-friend though.

Yep, nothing but an escort service which has been around for decades. Most of them expensive too. I've met someone who does this and she charges about $250 per hour. No effing way I would pay for something like that.

Not a bad idea IF it's legit and cost effective ($250 hour is way too much. I'd say take the local minimum wage and add 15% per hour for a full day].

There have been quiet a few times I would've paid for someone honest/legit just to hang out and show me the local area in countries where I didn't speak the native language.

According to rentafriend.com, friends start at $10/hr.

I suppose I would hang out in a bar and drink for 10 bucks an hour, considering I do it for free now and it usually costs me money. Although hanging out with social retards might get annoying really fast if you drink fast enough it would become tolerable.

So rent a friend is sorta similar to a frat then?

Pay us $XXX per month and you can hang out with us and be "a brother"

Modern humans have become some nauseatingly annoying that we now must pay people to even put up with us.

So more or less a cheap "escort" service with no obligation to take off your pants.

I like it, how can I sign up?

I suppose if you can specify the gender of your rented friend there is an outside chance you can coerce your captive audience into sleeping with you. Depending on their rate, it may be cheaper than going the traditional route of buying a lot of drinks and hoping the woman gets drunk enough to make bad decisions.

You guys seem to be sure that it's not much different from an escort service. The guy behind it explicitly claims otherwise. Personally, I would probably never use something like this. However, this service can also work as sort of a match-making website. You "rent" a friend/partner-to-be and if you get along with the guy/girl, both of you can discontinue the memberships and take it "offline".
