Another SETI + WinXP question

For some reason SETI makes my computer extremely sluggish when running SETI@Home. This thing is pretty quick when its not running; its my older 1GHz Athlon with 256MB ram on an Asus A7V, 60Gigger Maxtor, etc. It's no speed demon, but its fast enough for most things. But as soon as I click on SETI, things slow down to a crawl. It takes OE several seconds to load up; same with IE and Mozilla. Mouse clicks in the Systray take several seconds to register, and stuff like that. As soon as I quit SETI, its back to being speedy.

I remember I had this problem a while back, but I don't know if I ever fixed it; I built a new computer and stopped worrying about this one for a while. I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem as well. A few quick searches turned up nothing save my old thread.

Yes, there are several possible causes.

Are you using AVG? If so try exiting AVG & start seti to see if problem goes away.

Are you using a detonator driver with your GF2?
I have personally experienced what you describe with certain detonator drivers.
Using Detonator version 4109 solved it for me.

There are quite a few possibilities, it's irritating to have a machine act that way.
Mines a 2.1ghz AMD with 512megs HyperX ram and it would slow to a crawl, take minutes to open or close programs - especially MS Office related things or MS Help.

I have no idea what AVG is, so I suppose I'm not using it?

And I'm actually using an old TNT card in this system. That's still Detonators, though, but I don't know what version they are. I'll go check. Well, I'm not too sure; its been so long since I've actually cared about video drivers I forgot how to check. It says the driver is 5.1.2001.0, but I'm not sure how that translates into nVidia Detonator versioning. I'll try updating (or maybe downgrading) to 4109 and see. Thanks

Well, I have NAV, but not AVG. I updated to 4109, and its still slow. Also, now my mouse freezes when going from page to page, or when downloading images on a page.

BTW, as with you, Office program do take an extruciatingly long time to load. I'm downloading several versions of Detonators and will give them all a try.

Try disabling NAV & see.
Obviosly there's a conflict there, so if I were in you place I would turn things off one at a time and see if the problem goes away.
Do you use Seti Driver? Is the priority set to low?

I do use SETI Driver. It was set to Normal. Setting it to low made a little bit faster. Disabling NAV made it even faster. It seems that it is only at "normal" speed when SETI is set to Low Priority and NAV is disabled; doing any one of those by themselves yields only a fraction of the increase in speed. Obviously though I can'y run this machine 24/7 with NAV disabled.... Bloody Norton 😛

AVG is free & doesn't have the nasty "take over your whole life" effect that Norton does.
There has been some problem with some systmes running it, but far less than with Norton IMHO.

Cool, but on the site for AVG, it says it cannot be installed in a networked environment. Does this mean it wont work or they simply dont want you to?

EDIT: I uninstalled Norton in preparation for AVG, and also found a way to combat the freezy mouse; I lowered the graphics acceleration down one notch from full. Let's hope AVG doesn't slow down SETI now.

I have a machine : duron 1200, ASUS A7V, 256 Mb, WinXP, AVG and an old TNT2 M64 video card. No prob to report. 🙂

Norton AV is often a real pain....

Go here and download aida32 http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32 then go to the area under the computer tab called sensor. Then look for your +5 v reading. If it is really low, stop seti and see what it raises up to. I had the exact same issue and it turned out that with my system at full load my 5 rail was way too low!

the voltages were the same no matter what. With AVG running this thing is a screamer. Thanks for the help guys! 🙂 It's much more bearable now.

I've been running NAV Corp on my machine, but you guys have made me very curious about AVG. I'm going to give it a try and see if it's any better. Thanks for the tip.

Although i've always heard good things about AVG, it appears that it doesn't scan as many files that could contain a virus as some of the other AV programs out there.
This is from reading the About.com AV forums.
