Another SBC horror story...

So here I am on unbearably slow internet seeking your opinions concerning the following matter....

The internet has been running extremely slow all day. I get online to do some work and it works ok, but its painfully slow (slower than dial-up so says the bandwidth test)... so I decide to call up the SBC DSL people and figure out whats wrong.

I pick up the phone to call them, put the number in, dial it... and silence. No ring, no busy signal, no dial tone. I call it with my cell phone and I get 5 beeps, then nothing. Clearly the phone is dead.

So then I use my cell to call SBC phone service. Their response? -- "Oh, we are sorry, we can't do anything about it. It must be a short in your house. (WTF?! Don't treat me like I'm stupid) We will send a tech out tomorrow, sometime between 8am and 5pm."

Again, WTF... so I am supposed to sit here without phone service all day until your lazy @$$ tech decides to wake up from his nap in his truck and come out here "sometime" tomorrow. What, am I supposed to take the day off work so you can have your cushy 8-5 work day?!

Right now I am considering demanding a few days, if not a month free for their lack of service (what do I pay for again?) and absence of concern. This isn't the first time I have had problems either. It is usually a problem with the DSL (it was down for 3 days... twice), but this time the phone doesn't even work!!! :disgust:

 :|

How much do you think I can get out of them for this crappy service? Or is it just another "thats life" thing?

I think you can most likely get out of your contract if you whine enough.

Move to cable.

It seems like you're hellbent on getting SBC to give you free stuff. If the service is really that crappy, and major problems like this have occured more than once, then I would say something's wrong. However, there isn't much you can do about it, except wait for your contract to be up so you can switch ISPs. I hate to say it, but this is one of those "that's life" things.

We only have SBC service around here. Phones are all locked into SBC, and so the DSL has to be SBC too.

Cable internet might be an option to look into though... and VOIP.

So what makes you better than the technicians? I don't know if you've realized yet, but the world doesn't revolve around you.

Here is a good road runner story.

I lived in a Duplex over the summer. My unit was the 2nd and 3rd floor, the 1st floor was a different address.

So the downstairs people move out about halfway through the summer, and about a week after that our cable and internet go out.

It goes out on a thursday, what with the lazy fvckers not working during the weekend they send a guy out the next tuesday to poke around. Turns out they disconnected us instead of the downstairs people when they downstairs people cancelled their service.

No refund offered or anything for almost a week of no service.

I deal with SBC techs at work too... it takes them forever to respond. Can't they at least have 1 or 2 night crew techs?

Its not all the tech's fault... it's the way the company is run and the policies that are in place.

stop being a douche. since it's not an area/neighborhood issue, they assume it's something on your end. They schedule a line a tech to come out the very next day. If you want to be there when they look at the line or want them to come inside, request a later time slot or arrange for someone to be at the house. you should at least get a pro-rate for the time you were down for both services, but quit whining, you still *somehow* managed to find a way to get on the internet and post this crap.

Its the worst kind. Much worse than plain old horror.

And to the OP....weve had SBC DSL since May 2000. It was a hellish nightmare in the beginning when they were working out the bugs with hardware, software, service, billing, bandwidth, you name it.

Over the years however Ive learned the problems are usually on my end, so I always check those first. Either it was a buggy router that would lock up and stop downloads midstream, requiring a hard reset of the router itself 20-30 times a day or something else. I blamed SBC for about a year and half until I got the bright idea to replace the fscking piece of crap wireless LINKSYS router and violia! That fixed the problem. Check your hardware.

Next thing to do is make sure your not sharing your bandwidth with the whole damn neighborhood by encrypting the signal.

Lastly make sure all your wall connections are secure and no animals have chewed through or dislodged your phone line under the house in the crawlspace.

Otherwise cross your fingers and hope that Sanjit in the Punjab Valley of India has the answers. :(
