Another reason why I hate BB and prefer Newegg

Its true. Best Buy has massively higher operating costs because it actually employs more than Chinese nationals here on visas.

I've seen about 20 photographs of Newegg's US office and warehouse in the media that showed numerous workers, including an article Anandtech did awhile back. Might as well have been snapshots of a family reunion in Shenzhen or Guangzhou. I've seen more diversity in a box of golf balls.

Don't get me wrong, Newegg rocks, but they run a very shrewd business that no brick and mortar operation could ever hope to compete against.

But I managed to get my 8800gt from BB for much cheaper than anywhere else - including newegg - in december, $207.00.

But having 100's of stores and 1000's of more employees means you can't really compete with someone with no BM presence and a giant warehouse. But a near 3 to 1 price difference is a bit extreme.

You can toss dell into that mix, too, and they don't have any BM stores to deal with. Buy this machine with 1gb of DDR 667mhz ram for for $500. Want to go up to 2gb? $100 more. 4GB, $250 more. Meanwhile you can buy 4gb yourself for under $100.

Just Price match whatever you want at BB. I talked to a GM at a store here in indy and he said that they recently adopted a storewide Price match policy on all items from online as well as B&M sellers if it stays above their cost.

Well the thing about Newegg is that you have to know exactly what you want, which is no problem for some people. However, at BB they can help out the people who don't know the exact part or who don't know that much about computers. Also, you can pick it up right away instead of having to wait a couple of days for shipping.

Then you can add in returns.....never had an issue or restocking fee once at BB and I've returned more than a couple of things, including three computer chairs. And the refund on my item showed up on my card within minutes.

Contrast that to Newegg......just returned a 4GB set of RAM that had one stick die after a week. No biggie.....bought a new set the day the original died, but from a more "reputable" manufacturer.

Returned the defective set to Newegg. Got hit with a 15% restocking fee despite the set of RAM never going to be restocked....go figure. Then it took over a week to get my card credited.

Not saying BB is the "best buy" in a lot of things.....but having instant pickup of the item, far faster and easier returns....sometimes that makes up for BB's hgher prices. Pure convenience.....and if you are careful and watch, you don't pay that much over Newegg, anyway.

The other week I went to BB for kicks and asked someone to recommend me a good gaming PC. The guy pointed me to a Q6600/2GB/IGP system because it had four cores saying it'd play Crysis maxed. o_O If you're going to buy from BB you absolutely need to know what you're going to buy so you don't buy something else or buy something more expensive.

I agree. A few years back a friend of mine decided to go to BB (against my advice) and purchase a PC. He asked the guy if it would play games. He was told. "It will play any game" The damn thing had an Intel IGP. We all know how many good games that will play.
