got his address?

take him to small claims court, don't let this bs fly, somebody needs to make an example of those frauds.

That's a good idea, but wouldn't you have to file it in their jurisdiction? Or can you file a case against them in yours and not have to eat travel costs?

Luckily I've never had to file a claim, but if you insure and do sig conf with USPS is it the same hassle? I was under the impression that USPS will just refund the money if it's lost or missing. That really sucks about UPS requiring to "inspect the package", I'm glad I haven't had to ship with them yet.

from Ebay's own Ship Cover insurance:
If your buyer does not open a case through eBay Resolutions, ShipCover will send an email notification of a claim submission to the buyer to verify the claim. If the buyer doesn't respond within 15 days of receipt of the claim submission notification email, a reminder email will be sent to the seller requesting the seller work with buyer to verify the claim. If the buyer doesn't complete verification within 30 days of claim submission, the claim will be denied and closed.

Therefore it is important that you keep the lines of communication open with your buyer. Working with your buyer may help you get your claim settled more quickly and easily.

Which means that if the buyer doesn't want to cooperate, you are fcked. Ebay is a stupid scam.

Umm, simple solution to the posted story, contact the local police department for the buyer and file a report stating he is trying to extort money from the seller. He has email proof. The police will show up at the guys house and confront him...

I don't understand why people don't get police involved, what has been described is fraud, etc. If you care enough about it then do a little legwork and report it. I think people are just lazy. Just because it was done online does not mean there are no laws associated with it...

Because as far as eBay is concerned, as a buyer all you're required to do is pay for the item. If you pay for the item in a reasonable amount of time then you should get positive feedback.

It was probably designed as a way to prevent sellers retaliating against buyers who leave crappy feedback. For instance, if I buy something and pay instantly but the seller doesn't ship the item for two weeks I'd leave him negative feedback for being so damn slow. Before the change, there was a good chance the seller would then leave me negative feedback for calling him out, which isn't really fair I did everything I was required to do.

But, when someone abuses the system as the story in the OP, the seller gets screwed. This is also why I only go to eBay as a last resort CL all the way even if I have to sell the item for less.

Usually I find a reasonable selling price on eBay, minus eBay and paypal fees and then list it for that price on CL.

I think they also did it to prevent sellers from retaliating over outrageous shipping charges. I've seen too many items close with "expedited" shipping at $15, only for the item to arrive in a bubble mailer 1st class.

What a stupid post. VtPC83 is right: the guy was likely defrauded out of $450 by the buyer, who is now trying to extort an additional $100. Don't get police involved = guy keeps scamming people and seller can't get his money back.

I guess NO ONE is off-limits to the super troll... not even himself :p

Or the seller wants to charge $30 for something that can fit in a $15 USPS flat rate box.

No, ebay was "supposed" to take care of inflated shipping charges.
I know it isn't a perfect fix, but they've at least killed one of the main reasons for inflating shipping in the first place - to avoid the final value fee on that portion of the final price.

Shipping rates are a lot better then they used to be.

A few years go I remember shipping rates for small items in the $30+ range. You had to be really careful about what you bought because shipping could be outrageous.

This guy wants $10 to ship a canteen cup that weighs just a few ounces.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/CANTEEN-CUP-STOVE-/280821754972?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item416247ec5c

I just checked and ups ground shipping for a 4x4x4 1 pound package from me to california is $10.32. Since the package for that canteen and stove could be larger and weigh more, the shipping charge they list seems reasonable.

I have seen other examples recently of people wanting $15 - $20 to ship low weight small items.

you have to factor in the inconvenience and cost of packaging the item, driving to the post office, waiting in line, etc

dont like? dont buy.

I got scammed on eBay for $300. Put in a claim that I never got the product, they come back and tell me the account of the seller got compromised/hacked and there was nothing they could do since the seller did not have that amount of money in their account. I was out the money and I haven't bought anything since. F ebay and PayPal.

2 weeks ago I bought 4 canteens with pouches and stainless steel canteen cups. Think I paid less then $15 shipping, which seemed reasonable.

I also bought 2 large alice packs, the shipping on that was like $11 or $14.

Every time I wanted to sell something on ebay I gave up because it seemed like such a huge pain in the ass. I just try to sell it on here or throw it in the trash instead.

I find it okay generally (recently sold a whole bunch of misc tech stuff - USB GPS, 2TB HDDs, ec.) The biggest problem I had was with auction winners who wanted backsies ("Oops! I clickeded by mistakes! Can I haz cancellation?")

Given how anonymity on the internet allows people to expose their inner douche, I've always been unnecessarily paranoid about sales transactions with people online. Going through a reputable business is one thing; if Amazon screws me, I have legal recourse. But trying to track down MeTaLlIcAfAn69!! after he screws me on an eBay bid? That's damn near impossible. As such, I have refrained from using any online service to sell something which doesn't included an actual face-to-face meet for the exchange. Sure, that's a bit extreme, but it's just not worth the hassle when something goes wrong.

Given the story the OP posted, if the "buyer" tried to extort money for helping with UPS's investigation, I'd turn him in so he could get some nice extortion charges. Then I'd file a civil small claims suit against the idiot. There are plenty of legal options for dealing with scum.

One rule I learned over the years is to never sell on ebay or even FS/T forums an item that you can't afford to lose. I have zero trust in USPS, UPS, Fedex to honor their "insurance BS".

IME, it's all a giant game of potential BS where the middleman (ebay, shipping company) always gets paid while everyone else has no protection. Ebay is such a BS company with no oversight. A company that can't even investigate email/proof that takes a minute for items costing hundreds of dollars is a scum company that purposely does what it does.
