. . . or buy one.

From the latest US News and World Report . . .
Concerned by experimental crash tests suggesting that no car on the road can survive a side-impact whack by a lumbering sport utility vehicle, the Arlington, Va.-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety plans to warn Detroit to build better cars before the final evaluations take place.

Evidently NO car will pass their standard. The Governments side-crash standard is 30 years old. These new tests use a bumper that is 12 inches higher than government regs.

Tests have shown the SUV bumper creaming the upper part of car doors - and flattening crash dummies.

Feeling secure now?

go live in cuba if you want to be a facist.

I think you missed the point somehow (actually I am not a bit surprised) . . . look at how I started my topics title and notice how it is finished by my first sentence ("or buy one").

It DID, however, get your attention. :)

EDIT: YOU are making the fascist statement here . . . maybe I don't want to move to Cuba . . . :D

Uh, not really (I think they have their place and purpose) . . . but there is a problem for "encounters" with any car.

Evidently the governement didn't take "side collisions" into account by SUVs. Car owners, beware . . . your luxury car is no safer than . . . well, you get the point.

Bah...if you can't fit 7 people in a Sentra, you're not trying :)

people who drive SUVs are yuppies, usualy those who don't know how to drive. scary.
usualy when i pull up beside an SUV i see the driver is either on a cell phone or doing some other thing to distract themselves from the road......

i don't like SUVs for several reasons:
-they look gay
-they are too tall for the width which makes them flip like nothing
-they are too heavy to show any real power.... a Nissan Sentra can beat an SUV in the quarter mile pretty much because it weighs 2000 pounds less
-they take as much gas as my dad's '86 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with 4 barrel carb (about 8 miles per gallon in the city because theres virtualy no freeways in this damn city)
-they are a hazard to everybody on the road because the bumper is too high

SUV whiners are the worst of them all. STHU already:)

I drive a car-based sport-ute on a regular basis (Toyota Highlander Limited). I took my Camry back home last Tuesday and brought the Highlander up the next day to load all of my crap in it (no way I was fitting everything in my car). Now lemme see, what did I load in the Highlander (with the rear seats still upright):

35" tall refrigerator (standing upright of course), microwave, shelf, full width window fan, oscillating fan with base, a duffle bag filled with a sh!tload of books, about 8 shopping bags full of various cables, wires, electronic components, scanner - printer - speakers (all in their original boxes), my computer, my 18.1" LCD monitor, large box of clothes and various items from my desk droor, a large basket full of clothes, and a closet full of clothes (still on the hangers) and shoes and various other items scattered between the rear seats and the cargo area. The front passenger seat was empty except for the two letters I had to mail at the post office and my book bag in the front passenger floor board;)

And I averaged 23 MPG on the way back home so go piss in the wind or something.

If you don't have one, STHU. If you haven't driven one, STHU. If you CAN'T drive one, STHU. Otherwise, STHU! ;)

Oh, and being that the Highlander is based on the Camry chassis and hence sits lower than most traditonal SUVs, it won't do as much damage to you pansy bleeding hearts in your CRXs.

Some people (like myself) own an SUV for the abilities that they give us over regular cars. Moving in a Honda is pretty tough, but I've moved several times with my Jeep. I've gotten to the point where I can't move all my funiture, but it is still very useful. Ever need to bring back lumber or large amounts of fertilizer or whatever from the hardware store? An SUV is great for that sort of thing. Driving in the winter sucks, but 4WD is sure handy. Finally, I wouldn't go off of paved roads in the mountains in a sedan. Granted, most people don't use their SUVs for these sorts of things, but that doesn't mean that the rest of us should be denied our trucks. I could say the same thing about large pick-up trucks, but there are many people out there who couldn't do the work/hobbies they like to without their pickups. Keep in mind, this is the perspective of someone who has lived in the mid-west his entire life. Try telling a Kansas farmer that they can't/shouldn't drive their pickup trucks because it is unsafe.

and for those who think that nobody who owns a luxury SUV actually ever uses the "UV" part of their cars, think again. My father regularly uses his Lincoln navigator to haul medical documents around. He only got a lincoln cuz he could deduct the lease on his taxes. :p

you mean you put fertilizer in the interior of your vehicle? fertilizer has a high amount of nitrogen in it and it eventually breaks down and forms into ammonia, you should be careful about hauling open fertilizers incase they spill.

i don't have a problem with people who actually USE the vehicle for what it is for but yuppies who don't do anything but drive around the city piss me off.....the ones who buy stuff just to show it off are the ones who don't know how to use it such as a little 16 year old girl driving a Chevy Suburban.....i mean come on.

if i had to do stuff i would buy a truck, a maybe a one of them Dodges with a diesel engine :)

1) So do Sentras
2) Very few SUV's flip for no reason (you are making BROAD generalizations)
3) You know absolutely nothing. A Sentra (non SE-R) would get it's ass handed to it by just about any compact/mid-size SUV with over 200 HP
4) See above regarding Highlander
5) Not all of them

As for the Sentra comment...A Chevy Trailblazer (0-60 7.9 seconds, 1/4 mile 16.3 seconds) would r@pe your Sentra (non SE-R) 0-60 and through the quarter mile as would a Honda Pilot (0-60 8.1 secs, 1/4 mile 16.3 seconds), Ford Explorer and Ford Escape. Hell, even our Highlander would likely beat it.

You also fail to realize that the majority of SUV's sold are compact and mid-size SUV's which aren't THAT large. In fact, they're shorter than most mid-sized sedans. You gas bags like to trounce on the larger Suburbans and Excursions. They don't sell in very large numbers in case you didn't know.

Come on people, there are many more dangerous things in our lives than SUV's. Bicyclists may whine that all cars are dangerous in impact as well ;)

I have driven better handling SUVs like the 4Runner and Jeep Cherokee and I think SUVs are difficult to drive, anyone that says they are easy to drive are lying!

/me flattens Honda Civic ricebucket with my 2001 Durango SLT :)

The 4.7L engine is quite peppy, thank you, and I rather like the woodgrain interior, and the heated leather seats..

No, I don't fill my vehicle with fertilizer... I'm talking about bags of lawn fertilizer here, or bags of whatever... dirt, concrete...

Those Dodge pickups are pretty cool. I'll never own one because I like the flexibility that the SUV gives me. I can haul people in the back as well as cargo, so it is the best of both worlds.

SUVs aren't that tough to drive in my opinion, but maybe I say that because they are all I've ever driven. You can't do the stuff you can do in a car. No high-speed turns in an SUV. Finally, I'm a big guy, and I like the fact that SUVs tend to be nice and roomy.

LEARN HOW TO DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!! :D

I've driven many different SUV's. I basially spent my first 2 years of driving behind the wheel of a '94 Explorer XLT. It is NOT hard to drive. Next SUV that I had significant wheel time behind (25,000 miles) was a '97 Explorer XLT. Never had a problem handling it. I've also driven Blazers, Trailblazers, Grand Cherokees, newer Explorers, Escapes, CRV's, and Envoys. They are all relatively easy to handle. Sure it takes a LITTLE more effort to drive than a Civic but big fuggin' deal.

The Highlander I drive a lot now is based on the Camry chassis. It accelerates faster, handles better, is quieter, and stops better than my '95 Camry. It is also VERY easy to drive and park.

as for the dumb "mini-ute's" or car based SUV's--- they are pointless.. they are to low the ground and to underpowerd and lack the suspension necessary to go off road.

If i wanted better handling, better gas mileage, more cargo space, better safety, better looks, and probably cheaper insurance, not to mention the added safety and convienence to other drivers on the road-- you can get a Station wagon, such as the subaru outback or legacy wagon which would probably kill your highlander in any and every aspect.

as for sentras, last year i fit

a mini fridge,
microwave,
desktop computer w/19" monitor and klipsch 4:1 speakrs,
27" tv,
clothes,
books
lacrosse equipment
and an ass load of other crap in my car.

What's so difficult in driving a SUV? Sure, you can't expect it to act like Ferrari in curves, but IMO there's nothing hard when you consider your car dimesions and drive in reasonable speeds.

exactly, people who have suv's and USE THEM aren't bad. THere have been occasions where i've needed an suv or similar type vehicle. And i understand that they are conveinent for families who cant afford a van, truck, and car... becuase it does a little bit of everything.

But when somebody drives around a ford excursion, who could just as easily be driving a regular car around--- that really pisses me off becuase that excursion is a danger to me, blocks my view of the road, eats up a lot of gas and kills the earth, is an eyesore, and probably raises my insurance. ANd it promotes communism. okay, maybe not that last one. But for christ sakes, if you dont need and SUV, dont buy it just to be a poser and pretend to be cool

Bravo, you want a cookie? At least I could actually still FIT another person in the Highlander. That stuff you mention is in NO way comparable to the loadout I had in the truck. Also keep in mind that I didn't even have the vehicle packed above the rear headrests as I could still see back to the back window.

Car based sport-utes are not useless as you say. Most SUV's don't go off-road so why make them on heavy frames?? DUH!!!!!!!!!!! Car based utes are more fuel efficient, and lighter. Hell, the Honda Pilot has more interior space than the truckish Trailblazer due to its unit body.

As for not choosing a Subaru over the Highlander. It's called CHOICES!!!!!!! BTW, the Highlander has a more powerful engine, more interior space, more cargo room, higher ground clearance, and a taller cargo area than the Legacy wagon. It's also faster as well. Anything else?:)

If you're gonna come in here and bash SUV's, at least get your facts straight.
