Another reason NOT TO BUY an HP laptop

This thread is part informational and part B&M.

Wife had a rock-solid Toshiba Laptop.

Laptop was getting slow so she sells it a buys a "better/faster" HP Pavilion!

Within 2 months the unit starts having problems (a good sign).

The unit boots up but the cursor is frozen on the desktop and will not move, probably a driver/device issue with touchpad - right?

We get online and get HP support to "correct" the problem. This sucks as online support is sooo slow.

Within a week the problem returns.

I come to her rescue and recommend getting rid of the HP bloatware and install XP Pro.

I install XP Pro and everything is fine for a week.

The problem returns!

I call HP and get a nice Indiam lady who asks a few questions, puts me on hold and proceeds to tell me that I VOIDED THE WARRANTY by loading a BETTER OS!

I asked if I reloaded the XP Home Edition with bloatware, would I get tech support - I was told yes.

Moral of the story:

1 - DO NOT and I repeat DO NOT purchase an HP laptop.

2 - If you already own an HP or decide to buy against my warning DO NOT upgrade your OS or you VOID your warranty.

Infomercial/rant over ...

Obviously you didn't "void your warranty," they just won't support an OS that didn't ship with the PC.

That is completely, 100% standard.

Agreed. It's the same as if you upgraded any of the hardware in a system - if the problem is being caused by the new hardware, the problem won't be supported under the warranty.

Uh.

1) I own a HP laptop. I have no problems getting support and I triple-friggin-boot (and not one OS is the one that came on it)
2) I imaged the factory setup anyway. First thing I did when it came out of the box.
3) Your warranty isn't void - they just won't support an OS they didn't sell you.
4) Install the HP "bloatware" for the touchpad. Trust me.
5) If that doesn't help, call up, tell them the touchpad is defective.

I am reloding the OS as we speak. I am amazed that no one sees the irony in this.

Also, judging by how stupid you are - you DO know that the right edge of the touchpad is a scroll wheel, right? If you touch it trying to do something else, it may just decide to act "strange".

Obviously, HP doesn't support their products at all since you got crappy outsourced pretend support that doesn't know anything.

Eyemwing,

You do not know me and if you were standing in front of me right now I doubt you would be so "helpful" as to say I am fvcking retarded and how stupid I am.

I will not go into how many decades I have been working with computers and how many engineering degrees I have but you sir are a piece of work!

Treat others as you want to be treated ...

He could just "claim" that he has the original OS when he really doesn't  Don't see any harm in that because it's not like you send your laptop with your HDD.

Decades and degrees mean nothing here - HP isn't responsible for supporting software they didn't give you. PERIOD. Read the terms. No manufacturer is. You got a physically bunk trackpad, this sh!t happens with EVERY manufacturer. The trick is to doctor the truth a little bit so that they'll give you a new one without your having to make a god damned thread about it. You *SHOULD* know this if you've been working with computers as long as you say you have. Surely this isn't the first one that's broken.

Eyemwing,

Now thats better ... you can actually talk to someone without attacking them personally ... I'm impressed.

I agree that an education and experience mean nothing here ... all you have to have is a computer and an internet connect and you can become anything you wish and you can treat people any way you wish (with almost toal anonimity).

Why treat people with respect and politeness when you can call them idiots and retards?

My big mistake was even posting here .. you are right. My mistake for considering myself a member of a "community".

Exactly. You sir, are a moron. No manufacturer will support aftermarket modifications.

fbrdphreak,

Again, would you just walk up to a person you met and call them a moron? You sir are another fine member of this community.

The next time I hire a new employee one of the questions on the application will read:

"Do you belong to the Anandtech.com forum community and do you post in "off topic""

If the applicant answers "yes" I know the kind of person I would be hiring - not worth hiring.

Because I'm paid to treat them with respect and politeness and baby them and support their every whim - and I'm not on the clock, so I'm just telling it like it is.

If you have to be paid to treat people with respect then there is something wrong. I was raised to see the good in people and to respect them until they gave me a reason not too.

In this case I made one HUGE mistake ... posting here. I have been called a fvcking retarded, and idiot and now a moron.

I treated you just like I met you in my office, on the street, or in my home. In return you, fordfreak and a few others have used the anonimity of the Internet to try to belittle and degrade me. I could be anyone from a simple janitor to a CEO of your corporation. Would you treat me this way if I was your bosses' boss? I don't think so.

In the end I cn't really blame you, it is a sign of the times. Read through many of the threads in Off-Topic and you will find numerous instances of senior, and I mean SENIOR members like yourself belittling and bullying other users. It is just not right, many times for no good reason.

Would you want to be treated and you and fordfreak have treated me?

Yeah, I asked eMachines about how I could get drivers to install on Windows XP Pro and they wouldn't even tell me. For some reason the drivers won't install unless i use the factory disk.
