In the second debate Bush clearly stated that he did not want to import prescription drugs from Canada.

In the third debate Bush states that he is now looking into importing this year's flu vaccine from Canada.

Is this hypocritical or what?

Not a hypocrisy if the vaccinations are tested and verified to be safe before they come in, which is the reason he stated he wanted to regulate/prevent drugs from Canada.

After the Swine Flu immunization fiasco, it's difficult to find US manufacturers that are willing to accept the liability of producing vaccines.

I think there are a lot of Bush supporters(myself included) who would admit that his answer to the canadian drugs question was pretty pathetic. Kerry clearly won that issue and made Bush look like an idiot.
Of course what Kerry failed to mention was that if we allow the importation of drugs from canada, the loss of profit margins from US sales will be made up by raising the prices at which the drugs are sold to Canada. So what would most likely happen is we would split the difference. If buying in Canada is now 30% cheaper, the price would go up 15% in Canada and go down 15% in the US. So yeah, we would save some money, but Kerry is exaggerating the amount.

I am in favor of allowing that though if that is what it takes to stop US drug purchasers from subsidizing the canadian purchasers.

See, not everyone who is voting for Bush is just a "Yes" man. I disagree with him on a number of issues and am not afraid to admit it.

Chiron, a American company, seemed willing to manufacturer the vaccines. Granted they where doing it in England and it appears they have had quality control problems.

Prohibiting reimportation of American pharmaceuticals is hypocritical if you profess to believe in free markets. Yes, the price differences will even themselves out if allowed to flow a natural course, and I think it should be allowed to happen. Allowing some free trade but prohibiting other free trade amounts to favoritism, and looking at the people in Bush?s cabinets and other appointments that we?ve probably never heard of? (to paraphrase Bush himself) it?s not difficult to see who he favors. (Mostly energy and pharmaceutical interests, in case you haven?t been paying attention.)

Flu vaccines - 52 % from England, 48 % from France, ALL production outsourced.
Both companies actually owned by US Corporations, but labs in foriegn countries.

Why ? We don't even control out own destiny when it comes to Pharmaceudicals.
Proffit for these companies is more important than our citizens well-being.
It's ALL imported, this 'Danger of Imported Medicine' is a sham.

The laws are alredy in place to import drugs from Cananda. The problem is that it simply is not safe. Their are counterfit drugs, etc. There is no way to gaurentee those drugs would be safe. THIS IS THE PROBLEM. I hate Bush, but there is nothing he can do about it.

AS for importing the flu vaccine from Canada, do you see the problem here and why it's not being pursued.

Anyone else here see the reimportation of American Pharmaceuticals as just plain dumb? Nothing personal to Thegonagle - his post just gave me an opportunity to vent. I expect that sort of DS idea to come from Kerry, but you would think our nations brightest minds could come up with something better than paying for them to be shipped to Canada and then paying Canadian gvt or whoever a profit. How about a plan where our government does wholesale procurement from the originators? Even a buyers club? This isn't even a critical post, just an amazed one.
