Inspired by THIS thread.

When your team isn't in the hunt, do you stop caring until next year, root for the other NY team, or root against the other NY team no matter what?

Examples:

Did you Mets fans root for or against the Red Sox last year when they played the Yankees in the ALSC?

Giants fans, would you root for the Jets in the playoffs vs another team?

I had a real problem in '86, but I ended up rooting for the Mets. I just don't hate them as much as I hate the Sox.

As a Giants fan I have no problem rooting for the Jets, it's different than Mets/Yankees. I have a real hard time rooting for the Mets.

I abhor the Yankees.

I route for the Mets unless they play the Braves.

I route for either the Giants or Jets, because they're a NY team.

I don't route for the Rangers, but I don't hate them. I route for the Islanders.

If the Mets are out of the hunt i'll root for the underdog, last year it was the Red Sox so I rooted for them.
In regards to football I'm a Giants fan first but I still root for the Jets every week unless they are playing the Giants.
Hockey i'll root for Rangers first but I have no problem rooting for the Islanders.

God forbid you publically announce that during a subway series at Yankee Stadium

What I don't get is how the hell you can be a Mets and a Braves fan, they are arch rivals in the same division. Even when they don't play against each other it still matters. At least with the Yankees its another division and another league.

You bet your arse I did. After the spanking the Yankees have given the Braves over the years, I could not possibly cheer them on.

Doesn't have to make sense. I like the Mets because they're a NY team and I loved when Eddie Murray used to play for them.

When I was 4, I saw the Mets lose to the Braves at my first ever baseball game and have been a Braves fan ever since.

Also, to have a rivalry, you actually have to win a few games against a team ;)

Oh don't play the Mets like, they have a lot of heart and thats all that matters.:)

And if you were a real Mets fan you would hate the Braves for the pain, suffering, and sleepless nights they cause you.

i'm not a big baseball fan, and to be honest, i barely follow the sport as much as i used to. yankees are my family's team (having been born in ny), but after moving to florida, we got season tickets to the marlins games as soon as the team was formed. that said, i'm a yankee's fan since i'm back in new york, but when they go up against the marlins, i'm true to the team i grew up watching.

when i hear the yankees or marlins make the playoffs, i follow a little more closely and even try to make it to a game (i was at a yanks/red sox game last year), but if they don't make it that far, i stop following the sport for the season. i guess i'm apathetic. even if they won, i'm not overly excited or ready to brag about it.

edit: this kind of holds true for NHL - panthers vs. rangers as well. but i'm more into hockey, just not that much.

That's what happens when the teams you root for are actually good. If your team has sucked for the past 20 years you get excited when they have any achievement. For me its when the Mets make the playoffs.
