Ok, so here's the deal. I just built this system:
Gigabyte P35-DS4
Intel Q6600 B3
4 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800MHz
CM690 Case
4x120mm fans (1 intake, front; 3 exhaust, 2 top, 1 back)
GeForce 8800GT
Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler
Originally I tried the stock cooler (I don't overclock) and the thing idled around 55 degrees. I remounted the HSF, assuming this must be the problem. It still idled around high 40's/low 50's. I used AS5 that time. Under load, before and after remount with stock cooler, it would get up to high 70's, flirting with 80, when running 4 instances of Prime95.
So I bought the Tuniq tower and installed using some brand new AS5 (the other stuff was kind of old), but my idle temps are still around 40 degrees. After running 4 instances of Prime 95 for over 30 minutes, the temps have stayed stable but they are 59/62/61/58. This still seems too hot.
I should note that the side of the case has been off during all of this, and that I didn't add the 8800GT (which no doubt added some heat) until after I installed the Tuniq tower.
I'm running Prime 95 on the "large FFTs" setting.
So I'm looking for some opinions on this, it's going to be a real pain to remount the Tuniq tower because in order to get enough clearance I have to remove the MoBo from the case. So I'd like to avoid doing that if it's not going to help.
I should mention that I intend to use this computer to do some video encoding, play Crysis, video editing, and possibly other CPU-intensive tasks as well. Though realistically, 90% of the time it's mostly used for internet browsing, PhotoShop, and Microsoft Office.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
