So, in follow up to the food thing, the puppy seemed to take VERY well to the "Wellness Puppy" formula today. (mixed 50/50 w/ old Beneful)

New problem........

Pee pads working well in location #1. Between crate (pet taxi) and corner of kitchen creating a nice little 3-walled area which helps encourage the "area".

Reading web suggests moving pads closer to back door for transition to "outside" and to not have pads near where he sleeps/eats/drinks. Did that, but he returned to old area and pooped there twice today.

So, now I'm thinkin' should I..........

#1.) move pads back to old location cuz he doesn't seem to care it's near where he sleeps?? (we use new pad each time except for a single pee which we'll use a 2nd time)

#2.) move pads back but move food/crate to new area??

#3.) leave pads in the new location closer to the door & just deal??

TIA

I really can't help you as all I ever have done is pure crate training. I have two dogs and one dog only had 3 accidents in the house and my other dog only had 1 accident in housebreaking. Never did I let my dog feel it was ok to pee/poop in the house because it is hard to break.

Any reason you aren't going with pure crate training?

Your dog is clearly defective. Get a new one.

Honestly, though, I never worried about moving the pad. I just encouraged him to go outside and the pee pads were for when he couldn't hold it/forgot. The problem will eventually work itself out as his bladder/bowels get stronger.

Dude, you live in CA where the weather is nice outside year round. Crate train and take it out every 2-3 hours. Pee pads are made of failure and pee/poop in the house.

:p

Ya, well, he's only 8 weeks (today) and pees several times a day. (poops a few).

It's been a wee bit cold even for Cali lately (Probaly NW storms) but starting tomorrow things will get warmer in the coming days & we'll start introducing him outside. Right now it's just hard to catch him cuz he's so quick & the urges come on so quickly. (methinks)

I think I'm gonna move the pad back to the corner for now cuz the old spot really was an ideal spot.

At 8 weeks a dog can hold their pee for 2 hours on average. My first dog could hold her bowels for 6 hours at 8 weeks.

Only have the dog out of the crate when you are interacting with the dog. Unless your dog was raised in a filty environment, it will not pee/poop in its crate unless left in it too long. Do not allow the dog to roam without supervision until you are sure the dog is housebroken.

It only took a month or so to establish the habit where I didn't have to worry about it anymore.

That's why you take them outside every couple of hours if they have to go or not. Praise the hell out of them when they go outside and they'll associate peeing/pooping outside as a positive thing.

At this age, you don't wait for a sign.
