Another PSU vendor bites the dust

Is it just me, or is it damn near impossible to buy a decent PSU these days? Seems that only three companys make high-watt PSUs that work; Enermax, Antec, and PCP&C. Of those, only Antec is mildly affordable.

I just pulled a Fortron (same company as Sparkle, AOpen PSUs) 350w 120mm PSU out of a customer's rig... Second one I've seen in a week with a bad (<2v) 3.3v rail and failed cooling fan. And their warranty policy is "Contact your vendor." Newegg doesn't want to hear about it, since it's out of the initial purchase period. So much for the 2-year warranty that's on the damn box.

(And I'm giving both these customers free RMAs on their mobos and whatever other equipment is fried and free upgrades to Antec TP-II 550 PSUs, at great expense to me)

First thing I wanna say is that there's always a chance of any PSU dying prematurely. These chances are smaller with better quality PSUs, but there's still a chance. Maybe you just got unlucky.

Also there are many other companies out there that make great PSUs, not just the ones you listed. And I got a great Enermax 460w PSU for about 70 bucks, what makes that not affordable?

Enermax is a good deal in the mid-wattage range, 350-450w. Beyond that, they're retarded expensive. And riceboy PSUs don't count as "good" - the second they waste time and money painting it or putting in LEDs, or god forbid breaking the spec and using demented wiring colors, I'll no longer sell it.

It's frustrating that a blown PSU has no warranty for what it kills, even if you are able to RMA the PSU itself. My brother had a motherboard and CD-ROM drive fried by a bad Antec Lanboy PSU.

Unfortunately, it's also perfectly understandable given all the fraud by home builders. Half the threads in Gen Hardware about someone killing a CPU or vid card with a failed mod or extreme overclock have the poster talking about trying to get away with RMA fraud.

Yet another example of the bad apples ruining it for the rest of us :(

Damn, I was immediately thinking that sparkle was one of the best (if not the best) psu manufacturer around. I guess they're slipping. And I'd take an Antec over an Enermax without blinking.

..how about Sparkle?? They've served me well.

re-read your post..didn't realize Fortron/Sparkle were the same..any of em can go bad I guess. But I've had no failures wit Sparkle so far.
