How many amps on the 12v rail would I need to get a good oc out of a 2.4c? They draw more off the 12v than Athlons, correct? And Athlons take alot from the 3.3v?

Would 16A on the 12v be good enough to get 3.5ghz or so:)? PSU in question is a SmartBlue sl350. Should I get something beefier?

Thanks!

Correct the vcore of the P4 chip is regulated from the 12v rail....The athlons I believe were from the 5v rail but if you look at most power supplies they seem to always combine the output for the 5v with the 3.3v in the listings.....

IMO a 16A on the 12v rail will likely not cut it and highly doubtful to 3.5ghz without possible power issues creeping up. I would say mid 20' to 30's...My enermax is near 30A per 12v rail and at 3.5ghz I still drop to 11.8v on the 12v rail....My antec true power 430 would drop to 11.6 with my old 2.4b@3.24ghz so I showed it the door and enermax came in and dominated. Don't quote me but the antec was either I think 20-24A on the 12v rail...

NOw I am not saying go get a more expensive enermax cause they are some good inexpensive power supplies ppl have got to run oc'd systems.....I think a 350watt enermax is reasonable in price and I think it is in the mid 20's for Amps on the 12v rail...I think the true power lie of 380,400 and 430 should get you better then that. I like my enermax's adjustable fan speed and dual fans....

it all depends on your board as well...

some boards read the rails funny....

the ic7 undervolts the 12v rail... reads it as 11.61 when it's actually around 12...

the asus p4X800 series overvolts the voltage rails and reads them high...

the antec truepower series imho are great psu's...

if you are into modding, you can adjust the voltages of the 3.3, 5, and even 12 volt rails by some mods...

another great psu, is the fortron (sparkle) fsp series... they have two knobs inside the psu, that can adjust all voltage rails up or down....

I agree some mobo read funny but that was actually on my albatron i845pe chipset mobo and when I popped in the enermax I never saw below 11.92v under load. If the mobo reads funny it would have done it on both in my opinion.....

Edit: I noticed on pricewatch an antec true power 430 watt can be had for 72.00 dollars and an enermax 465 (430watt) dual fan with whisper mode controls can be had for 75.00 dollars....That kind of spread I would take the enermax any day of the week and let the abundance of amps on the 12v rail work for me in the future with 4ghz cpus.

I have had a 2 antecs where I follwed them with equal powered enermax's since my P4 overclocking days began back in late 2001 and each time they were better power supplies on the same mobo and in one of the cases helped a power issue that effected my ocing ability and in both cases increased the 12v rails under idle and load....

Over at Newegg, there aren't very many that have the 12v rail up near 30. Those Enermax's get spendy pretty quick after 350w, so I figured I could spend a tiny bit more and get the Sparkle 550w, with 36A on the 12v. Enough to power 10 Hewlett-Packards!;) Good choice?

Hey, what kind of cooler do you use on that rig of yours, Duvie? Not a Prometeia, right? Please tell me you're not!

Yeah, they get really pricey pretty fast, don't they? I think that Sparkle 550 will serve you just fine. Sparkle makes pretty good psu's, after you get above the 400 watt ones.
