Another PDF Acrobat alternative question

Been searching for an acrobat alternative. Need something that can create and edit existing PDFs. I see there are lots of programs out there. It doesn't have to be free but it would be nice if it was less than Acrobat 8 Pro.

NitroPDF seems to be recommended although I have read some less than positive reviews about stability. Scansofts PDF Creator also seems to have stability problems. FoxIT gets good reviews but their stuff is all separate programs. I don't know how well they integrate but once you purchase the creator, the editor and the reader, it is quite expensive and they don't seem to offer any bundle deals.

Also, are any of these packages Acrobat 8 compatible or are they only compatible up to version 7? I am not even sure if there would be an issue there or not.

There's free way, openoffice and LaTeX combination is free and can produce terrific PDFs, and there's really no point of editing or creating PDF from nothing, always some other format is the middle man.
