Another OT question on RDRAM

Sorry guys, but I know I'll get the answer !!!

I have a Dell GX200, which currently has 64Mb ECC RIMM.
Do I have to get more ECC memory to upgrade or can I get the non-parity stuff or am I talking complete rubbish ???? Also, can you mix and match.

Also, is there a performance gain from ECC as it seems to be more expensive ?

cheers,

Col

Nope, ECC is actually a little bit slower, but it has error protection (the error checking is what slows it down a wee bit). Whether you can mix and match...that I'm not sure, I'll look it up after my exam

/me zooms out back to studying

Thanks guys, ECC it is (unless I scrap the 64M stick), I'll see if I can find out if the machine actually needs ECC or if it's optional..

cheers,

Col

No problem, I know support.dell.com like the back of my hand 🙂 (I lived in it 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for a year 🙂)

If the system is less than 30 days old, give Customer Service or your salesperson a call and tell them you want to swap for non-ECC. If they refuse, and non-ECC is an option, threaten to use the 30 day moneyback guarantee 🙂 You'd be amazed what you can get done within the first 30.

-edit- I just noticed I use entirely too many smilies 🙂 THERE I GO AGAIN! -/edit-
