The 6850 and 6870 are popular crossfire cards from what I understand, so single slot is probably going to help in the thermals there. More room to breathe. Or perhaps the smaller heatsink size will do as much bad as good. We'll see I suppose.

As a side note, I miss the days of the 8800GT, the nice single slot EVGA ones that I now think of every time I see a single slot card. I think card makers are getting too used to having dual slot to work with.

Single slot is dicey for getting decent temps on a higher end card. Even the 8800GT underwent a revision because the first cooler wasn't really good enough.

The single-slot cooler on the EVGA 8800gt was a piece of junk. I had one. Obnoxiously loud, incredibly high temps. Replaced the cooler right away. Is it any surprise so many overheated and needed to be baked?

It's been a long time since a modern mid-range card could safely operate with a single-slot cooler. I personally wouldn't take a chance with this new 6850. It will be loud, and it could eventually overheat.

Sweet. Too bad I already bought a dual-slot one.

It's sandwiched next to my soundcard, so I'd rather burn the money on a new soundcard (noticing sound driver issues with my Xtrememusic).

I would actually love if the 7770 was a 28nm 6870 with a single slot cooler (that was quiet and provided adequate cooling). Maybe a ~1000/1200 binned 28nm 6950/6970 instead (which would make more sense for them to be using VLIW4) for 7750/7770. They'd have plenty of room to make a 78X0 cards with like 2000SP and 2GB, and then they could have a 2800/3000SP high end 79X0.

I guess you missed the gtx460 single slot , which is cool and quiet.

"Obviously this means that the heatsink and fan design on the Razor card are just better quality - not only that but the noise levels on the card were not noticeably louder than the reference design. "

Have to admit that's pretty impressive. We'll see if they can perform the same trick with the 6850.

Still learning stuff about gaming PC's and about to get my own. What is a single slot GPU? My system will have a 6870, standard one I guess.

No it has plenty of room. It has 2 pci-e slots running at 16x and 4x and a few pci slots. It also has a 1x pci-e.

If you were gonna fill all the other pci-e/pci slots then you would need a single slot card but no one ever does that. These single slot cards are for
people with special circumstances and very little room.
Trust me you will be fine.

Problem with single-slot coolers is the fan is so shallow it has to turn faster to move enough air and that makes it louder. Bleh.

The 460's are definitely 1 exception. They really are cool running cards. I have a pair in SLI O/C to 900/2100 and the top one never goes over 75c. The bottom one is 10 degrees cooler. This is in a HAF932 with the 230mm fan blowing on them but they replaced a single reference ASUS 5850 that was in the same spot that would runner hotter.
