Another one bites the dust >:o(

i've had my tbird850 overclocked to 952mhz for awhile and i even got it into winndows at 1 gig but it was a bit too unstableat that speed. i figured it was because i was using the generic HSF that came with my moboard/cpu combo.
I was at Frys Electronics last night and saw this HSF with a peltier attached to it so i decided what the hell and got it. Here is the webpage for the company who makes the HSF/peltier:

http://www.magaland.com/cpucooler.html it is the Mag-cm25.
Anyhow, i get home and wrestle with trying to get the new HSF on there. It is a total bitch, and when i heard the godawful GRINDING sound when i tried installing it my heart stopped. I looked at the chip and i had managed to grind off a slight bit of the core's edge! I wiped it off and continued to wrestle getting the new HSF/peltier installed. SCRAPE again! God I was getting so pissed! I finally get the mofo installed and am sweating it big time wondering if it'll boot up. Power on.. i can hear it counting ram.. monitor screen stays black! ARGH! 🙁

I try repeatedly to boot up and same results. #@%@$!
Then I think, wait a minute maybe my wimpy 235Watt power supply can't handle the extra power of the Peltier. So i unplug everything except for the basics ( vid card, hard drive, and fan) and I switch the FSB jumper from 133 back to 100 (this will effectively put me at 700mhz .. if it boots).

I power on, and what do u know, it boots! a huge sigh of relief as it loads up windows. I get on AIM to tell my buddy what happened then I check the CPU temps in SANDRA... W T F?!?! 65C! I quickly shut down. I apply some radio-crak thermal grease to the HSF/Pelter and put it back on *cringe*

NOW THE POS WONT EVEN BOOT UP! I can hear the Ram count but the monitor stays black. I tried resetting the CMOS jumper, i tried taking off the pelter/hsf and putting my original HSF on.

Have I really trashed my Tbird 850? I am so MAD! at myself. I wish I had a way to test out my CPU 🙁 Anybody in the Plano/dallas area w/ a socket A boad cool enough to test me chip for me?? <worth a shot, hehe>

I am going to go buy a new Antec case with 300watt+ power supply and see if that helps. If not guess I gotta go buy another CPU >😱\

Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding the high temps: a so-so peltier with a mediocre heatsink is worse than a cheapo heatsink. For a peltier setup to work good the HSF must be a tiny god and the peltier must be a healthy wattage and have a very good power supply attached. There's a pair at my work that are melcor 72W peltiers with Alpha P126s attached (too bad it wasn't gonna be used for a CPU), a 230W AT PS with nothing other than ONE of the peltiers attached would not power it off of the 12V line, it took a 300W PS to be able to drive it.

We were trying to use the setup as a temperature control source on a calibration system, they couldn't change temp fast enough (20C-40C in 3 seconds)

Daemon, thank you for your information. It is almost lunch time, and im gonna jet over to the comp store and pickup a 300watt case and see if that helps. trying to choose between the Enlight 7237 and an Antec case.

ANTEC ALL THE WAY! I got mine yesterday and holy balls it is on hell of a case! I got two more 80mm fans, so I got a total of 4 80mm fans. It is VERY spacious, clean, and very sleek looking. I reccomend it to anyone! Antec SX1030 🙂 Oh yeah! I got a case sticker with my case! Hehe. Gotta dig those case stickers! Now I got AMD, Alpha Heatsink, Powered by Asus, and Antec case stickers on this badboy! Muhahahah!

Okay I just got back, I didnt like the way the Antec looked, it was the KS282 model.. 79 bux ouch. I am going with an Enlight 7327, 59 bux here locally. I dont have time to wait for a mail order case. Anyhow, thanks for the info about your case. My old Inwin case has a "K&N filtercharger equipped" sticker on it hehe 🙂

*sigh* okay Now I just gotta see if the CPU will boot when i get home from work tonight. I *really* dont feel like having to buy another CPU! I have other things i wanted to get for my system!

Okay, im over here at my friends house. I just tried my tbird CPU in his Asus motherboard and its a NO-Go 🙁

It's office, the CPU is TRASH! arrghghhhhhh man im so angry.
I took some nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol and removed my conductive pen marks from the bridges. I know its bad, but im gonna try and return the CPU tomorrow under warranty from the shop I bought it from. They will probably just laugh at me but its worth a shot. I cant really afford to pay for another CPU right now and I really need my comp!

I'm going to be buying a Duron soon. And the stories about you guys chipping your Durons and Tbirds putting on HSF are scaring the crap outta me!!!!!

Damn it man, you heard the grinding and you continued to force it on?!?!? How could you?!?! There goes the core. 🙁

A minute of Silence for the T-bird which got crushed to death

similar thing happend to me with a generic hs/fan from frys, when i got my hedgehog i took off the generic hs/fan and in doing that it messed up the core, sigh

yeah, well I was very very cautious in installing the HSF, I followed the instructions and it still killed the CPU. You would be pissed too if it happened to you I guarantee it. For the money I spent on this dead CPU and a new CPU to replace it, I could have just bought a way faster chip in the first place. Its not worth screwing with it.
