12/5

I have an NV41 card, and it overclocks like nothing I've seen, just regular cooler and everything. NV42 is based off the same awesome chip, and even a lowered process. The 6800 Go Ultra at 12/5 was beating the 6800 Ultra in some cases. On my card I got from 325/600 to 450/850 MHz stock cooling. I have not tried going any farther because I don't want to damage the thing. In comparison, my 9500 PRO crashed when I overclocked it 10 MHz core.

That's a very good question! Or at least 7500 or something... You'd think with the die shrink and all they'd just put in in with the new series, since it competes with the X1600's.

By the way, the 6800GS to me sounds good but not great. When they use terms like "competes with the 6800GT" (and then you find out it's 12/5 pipes/shader units), it doesn't get me quite as excited as "is faster than the 6800GT" (with o/c headroom to boot).

We've learned from the X800 Pro that pipes > clockspeed in these cases, as the X800XL is a bit faster than the X800 Pro.

Then again we also learned from the X1800XT that very high clockspeed = more pipes in some cases, so that just confuses things further.

So basically I'm saying, NV42 doesn't look that good unless it overclocks like nuts. If it does, sign me up for one!

What the other guys said about it being a Go 6800 core makes perfect sense. They're ditching the old Go 6800 cores 'cuz they want Go 7800's to be the performance mobile GPU. And keep in mind, the Go 6800 Ultra kept up with/surpassed the desktop 6800 Ultra in certain scenarios.

And they will release lower end 7xxx parts, they're coming; for now they're getting rid of old stock!

Still waiting on a response from the two NVIDIA guys I know....

Interesting... Was the GF 6800 Go a 12/5 pipeline architecture, or 16/6? Would a soft/hard mod be possible? Was the GF Go 6800 110nm?

12/5, and no a mod is not possible because the chip itself contains only 12 pixel pipelines and 5 vertex shaders. Not to worry though, the 12/5 at a high enough clock was able to beat the 16/6 GeForce 6800 Ultra. Yes, the GeForce Go 6800 Ultra is 110nm.

Well, are you talking about Go 6800 or Go 6800 Ultra? Both are 110nm.

The Go 6800 is NV41M (12/6) and the Go 6800 Ultra is NV42 (12/5).

12/5, but high clocks thanks to power saving & 110nm process

No mod to my knowledge, but most people don't try to mod laptop GPU's

Ah, so the Go 6800 Ultra is 12/5. That's interesting - with good cooling it could probably achieve high clocks.

The type of RAM would be critical as well - it would have to be 256MB of GDDR3 at at least 1 GHz (hopefully higher).

I'll be following this as it sounds like an interesting card.

Still, I had an X800 Pro, and even with overclocking the core to 525 MHz, the 16-pipe XL beat the X800 Pro in everything, and took a minimal overclock to match the X800 Pro when overclocked.

New info about this card

NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GS is expected to work at 425MHz for the chip and 1000MHz for the memory, some sources close to NVIDIA Corp. are reported to have said. The product is projected, according to the sources, to have 12 pixel pipelines, 256-bit memory bus support all the advantages of the GeForce 6 architecture, e.g. Shader Model 3.0. Moreover, the card will be equipped with 256MB of GDDR-3 graphics memory working at 1000MHz frequency. GeForce 6800 GS will also support SLI, so the PCB will also carry a MIO connector that allows connecting two graphics cards into an SLI configuration with the help of the SLI bridge.

A mid range, 425/1000 12pp 5vs 256bit 256mb GDDR3... at MSRP of $249.
:D

It is really a nice card, and could be a really good successor of the 6600GTs until the 7600s roll in.

ATI's Radeon X1600 generation was killing Nvidia's Geforce 6600 generation and Nvidia had to do something. The Geforce 6800 GS looks like a suitable riposte.

Radeon x1600 isnt even out yet, only x1800xl. Check newegg, not out till November. So inquirer is saying the paper launch of x1600 is killing geforce 6600??? Is inquirer on drugs?

Maybe I'll hold off building my system until these hit the market. There seemed to be a notable hole in nvidia's lineup in the $200-$300 range. You have the 6600GT and vanilla 6800s in the $150-$200 range and the 6800GTs and 7800GTs come in at $300+ (though you're starting to see some 6800GTs in the $275 range).
