I've heard a lot of good stuff about Dell and looked at their laptops, but what other good notebook manufacturers are out there for a decent price (I'm talking sub $1500) that offer decent game performance? I don't need anything fancy, but I'm looking for a large display (at least 14, but 15 is even better), a decent processor, but at the same type a nice design and good support.

The biggest problem I've seen is that it is hard to find any notebooks that aren't way too old used for a decent price. I'd be hesitant to purchase a used notebook anyway, knowing how some people toss them around, but it is just damn hard to find a notebook for $800 or so that offers a processor I could use, like 800 mhz Celeron or P3. Damn, all these faster processor speeds have just spoiled me I guess :D

I was also wondering about the P4 and P4-M thing. Also, does anyone here have an Athlon notebook? I've heard from most people and seen on several sites that they're pretty much junk because of the shoddy chipsets that are provided with them. For every day use, but light gaming, honestly how are they if I could snag one for siginificantly cheaper than an Intel system?

Also, outta curiosity, anyone have a Mac laptop they like a lot? I know gaming is a joke, but I've been curious about Macs for awhile now. I haven't used one since the original Pentium days (whatever processor the Mac was using :)), but I've seen them in the stores and liked OSX a lot, but knowing that the Mac would be fine for the every day tasks I know I'd use a laptop for, I think it wouldn't be too bad.

Anyway, suggestions?

Nevermind on the Mac thing. I should have expected this...$1,199 for a 600 MHz G3 w/ 128 MB of RAM and a 12.1 inch screen. No thanks, go suck it down Apple :)

Costco is selling a Compaq laptop for $1599 with the following specs, IIRC:

15" SXGA+ display
P4-1.6M
Radeon 7500
256 DDR
30 GB
USB2 / Firewire / Ethernet / Modem onboard
XP Home

I don't remember the model #, unfortunately.

It's a little bit above your price range, but that should give you an idea of what to expect for ~$1500.

IMO, laptop shopping should begin at B&M stores, or even a campus bookstore just to get an idea of what's currently out there.
