Hello everyone.

I've now begun to process information for RC5. As soon as I get my password I will join Team Anandtech. But I have a couple of questions.
1.) Should I join TA or sub-groups like TA Cube,etc...?
2.) Should I only be getting 2.79 mkeys/s w/ a P3 1ghz?
3.) Is there anything I need to do special to make RC5 perform faster, etc?

I plan to put RC5 on my 4 computers at work, will I do anything different there, than I did on this first computer? Do I have to wait 24hrs and get another password?

Thanks guys

JoeDaddy:

First of all welcome to the TeAm! 😎

If you join TA as a single individual or as a part of the Cube doesn't really matter for the TeAm, since you contribution will count just as much as a single individual!

If you go to the speed calculator you'll see that 2.79 is right on target for your 1GHz PIII... it says 2.8 but that is when you're not using it at all 😉

When looking at your numbers I'd think you've got as much out of that system as humanly possible! Great work! 😎

As for the other computers just use the same email address you've already used, and all the work will be credited to you. No other effort needed 😉

I hope you'll enjoy hanging out with us, any questions just ask and we'll try to answer!

With love and respect your fellow TA member

Once I have my password I can view my stats right? And since I set the pproxy name to proxy.teamanandtech.com my stats get updated every 30 mins?

Basically, the only thing you need to do differently with the computers at work is get permission from the computers' owner and/or sysadmin first!

Welcome! 🙂

I work for a computer shop here in missouri, so the 4 said computers will be the 4 in our tech area. hmmm, i like One's setup. Was thinking about doing something like that.

Welcome to the team, JoeDaddy! 😀

The autosend of your password doesn't work, so go Here, enter your email addy, go to the bottom of the page, and request the password be sent to you.

And yes, please make sure to secure the sysadmin/owner permission to run RC5 or OGR or any distributed project. 🙂

First, WELCOME to the TeAm ! 🙂

The 2.79 you got was from the "benchmark" function ? if so, you need to know that this function uses 100% cpu power (best case), unlike normal usage when it runs in the background. To know the effective output of the system, wait for some blocks to be crunched (ideal is 12 or 24 hours), and check the log in the client's windows, where it says something like

Summary: 105 RC5 packets (3360*2^28 keys)
4.05:22:28.64 - [2.42 Mkeys/s]

There you see my client has been running 4 days, 5 hours, at an average of 2.42 Mks. The difference between benched and real output will give you an idea of the impact of your using the computer (UT ?) vs leaving it alone.

The most basic, but oh-so useful performance-enhancement tip I can give is NO SCREENSAVERS EXCEPT BLANK SCREEN. An animated .scr can eat up to 90% of your cpu !

Just an update. I sold my 1ghz cpu, so this weekend I will be cracking with the 866EB. And after that I will be using a 550E. So hopefully I can get back to hard core cracking soon. Thanks again guys and gals.

JoeDaddy, I have a question for you as an official RC5 newbie.

What did you read or hear about RC5 or distributed computing that convinced you to try it? Many team members have tried in vain to get friends and even family to participate, but they just won't.

Anybody else who is new, we want to know. Looking for a few good buttons to push on people I know.

Thanks. JonB

I'm a computer tech so naturally i love computers. I work on them 9 hours a day, and then I come home and play with mine. I joined RC5 because I feel that we as a team can and will win this. RC5 is kinda like Counterstrike, once you start you are hooked. I've been currently planning how to make a crack rack like One's I think some people you just can't convince to try RC5 because they don't understand RC5.

Another question for you guys.
I'm going to start my crack rack soon, considering the price, i will be running dual P2 400mhz Xeon's w/ either 512 or 1mb cache. Is the 1mb cache worth it for the extra $25 price tag?

Welcome to the Team.

As far as the 512/1024 cache, That's a good question! RC5 will run the same on both of them. It depends on what else you want to do with your machines. If you want to try SETI@Home, the 1024 cache may help there. The other thing you may want to think of is resale value. Will the larger cache bring a larger return when it's time to trade up? Perhaps one pair of the 1024s for your server(main node), 512s for the rest?

For Seti probably. But RC5's performance is largely independent on the cache since the code is small enough to fit on the level1 and 2 caches of the CPU.

Welcome JoeDaddy!🙂

Your right that some people won't run a DC project, but there are a lot of reasons to give to try to convince them otherwise. There is supporting TA, a great site giving free and excellent hardware advice for years! Stats junkies love this stuff!🙂 Being on a team that's #1 in the world has some attraction (considering just how many people are doing it makes that real impressive). This forum is the most helpful one I've ever found. The client actually has some diagnostic value for the PC and a network. Did I say the people are great here?😉 Of course there is the Game Box and IRC channel. We have a great new web site too! Of course the folks here are great!😉

With the new SETI v3.0 clients, there will probably be very little to no speed difference between a 512 KB and 1 MB Xeon. Just wanted to let you know. 🙂
