I just got this computer last week and I'm already having problems with it. Whenever I try running a game on it the system locks up COMPLETELY before I can start the game (usually right before the title menu) this is often accompanied by a loud high pitched humming sound that comes out of my desktop speakers. I've tried taking it back to the store but they won't help me (last time I buy from that small business), I've tried updating drivers but that didn't help either. Anyone have any idea whats going on? Here's the specs:

The New Parts:
ASUS A7V600 VIA Motherboard
AMD Atholon XP 2500+ Barton 1.83ghz RTBOX
2 Samsung 512mb PC-2700 DDR
ASUS V9570TD GeeForce FX5700 128mb AGP
Maxtor 120gb ATA133 7200rpm HD

My Older Parts:
I think its a Sound Blaster 5.0
WD 40gb 7200rpm HD

Make sure motherboard inf drivers are installed. And look for a memory checker program to see if there are any faults in your RAM. I had a similar problem on this system due to a bad ram chip.

Thanks for the input. I just tried updating the inf drivers but no luck. As for the ram check i downloaded this one called loki and it didn't tell me anything. perhaps its not reliable? Could you recommend me a good memory checker or tell me the one you used? Thanks again.

invizibleman,

Welcome to the Forums!

Try MemTest86.
It will create a bootable floppy to run the test.
