I think you either need to be accepted into the beta, or wait until the free play actually starts (I haven't seen a specific date). I just went to http://trial.ddo.com and started the 10 day trial, 2.8GB or 3.8GB for the high res version.

Tried it a few days ago - you are limited to what you can do, but there is quite a lot of content for free. I'll probably jump back in [Khyber server] and take a look around some more - I've just got to remember how to play my characters again [combat is a bit different than other MMO's- you can't be sloppy and expect to live].
