Sheep Recognizes Obama's Face in New Study

The study may be useful in research into human brain disorders that affect mental processing.

CONTRIBUTOR: Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — A new study shows that sheep have the ability to recognize human faces from photographs on computer screens.

The Cambridge University study published Wednesday also shows that sheep can recognize the faces of their human handlers without any prior training.

It had been known that sheep can recognize familiar faces of other sheep and of humans.

The researchers say this study of the ability of sheep to recognize faces may be useful in research into Huntington's disease and other human brain disorders that affect mental processing.

Lead scientist Professor Jenny Morton says sheep have advanced face-recognition abilities comparable to those of humans and monkeys.

Among the faces they were trained to recognize were Barack Obama and Harry Potter actress Emma Watson.

The research was published in Royal Society: Open Science.

All our societal problems are on the verge of being solved!

Well . . . all our societal problems caused by an inability of sheep to recognize formal US Presidents and Harry Potter stars are on the verge of being solved!

Well . . . At the very least, all our societal problems caused by an inability of sheep to recognize formal US President Barrack Hussein Obama and child star Emma Watson are on the verge of being solved!

I know how it's easy to dismiss these things if the modeling for the actual study seems "weird," but this is actually kind of cool.

...you understand that they aren't asking whether or not sheep can recognize former presidents and famous people, right?

The sheep recognize Obama because they were told that if they like their wool they could keep their wool.

OK, I laughed.

Come on, guy, it's not like this really short article lists a specific reason why this might be useful or anything.

Sadly, not enough people actually read, understand, and communicate the scientific rationalization of this study (as reflected by the crappy clickbait article). For those interested, here is the final paragraph of the study:

"As well as providing novel ethological insights, this paradigm furthermore provides opportunities for investigating cognitive dysfunction. Indeed, face perception may be impaired at multiple levels in neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's disease (HD) [45] and Parkinson's disease [46], as well as psychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder [47] and schizophrenia [48]. The ability to recognize an unfamiliar face, even after it has been presented several times, is impaired in HD patients [45]. Furthermore, HD patients are unable to recognize specific emotional expressions [49], such as disgust, when they are presented without any contextual information [45,50]. Recently, a transgenic sheep model for HD has been developed [51]. These sheep show HD-like brain pathology in the form of aggregates [52], alterations in social behaviours [53] as well as changes in brain and liver metabolism [54,55]. Although it is a well-recognized symptom in HD patients, to date, higher-order behavioural and cognitive processing has not been tested in HD sheep. The face-recognition paradigm presented here would be ideally suited for studying cognitive decline in the transgenic sheep model for HD.

One of the points of this study is to utilize the preexisting sheep model of Huntington's Disease to understand and/or cure the disease, and the face-recognition aspect could be used as one potential phenotype to track the clinical course of the sheep.

And if anyone cares, this study was funded by the CHDI Foundation whose goal is to promote Huntington's Disease research.

It's amazing the astounding ignorance of comments that usually accompany basic research like this.

Damn got to hand it to the sheep.... it is not enough that they make excellent gyros, now they are curing diseases.

Per your article, the research is aimed at better understanding Huntington's Disease. I doubt you have the scientific cred to determine the value of this research.

Somehow I also doubt you'd be so amused if the face it recognized was anyone other than Barrack HUSSEIN Obama.

You're talking about people who believe that perception is reality. They don't get it. They never will.

Understanding the relevance of science and seeing potential humor which accompanies many things in life would not be mutually exclusive.

Dude, you really need to get over your TDS and recover your sense of humor. In the first place, I can quite easily understand the value of this research. Given that sheep can recognize many of the same things as normal humans and that a defective form of sheep has been developed with similar pathology to Huntington's Disease, they can form a fairly high level proxy to research this crippling disease. Especially given that we can't ethically kill a human and dissent his brain at the most scientifically advantageous times of decline. Second, they DID train sheep to recognize faces other than Barack HUSSEIN Obama. I even mentioned one of them - although I imagine you were already seeing sufficient red by that point as to preclude reading the rest. Third, the idea of someone being gainfully employed in teaching sheep to recognize famous people's faces - especially a former President's face - is just funny. Really, really fucking funny. If you aren't amused, then you should seriously seek psychological counseling. In the meantime, please allow me to humbly offer you a mechanism to blend in:

If I post something and other people are reacting as though it is humorous, but it enrages you, just imagine that you just saw Rand Paul being tackled and six of his ribs broken. The mental image of him writhing in pain should be enough to help you react in a way that others will see as normal and healthy.

Sheesh, some people are humorless dicks.

Where did you get "rage" and me "seeing red" from my post? I just found it amusing that you made a thread about sheep recognizing the face of Barrack HUSSEIN Obama. Just as I've always found your obsession with the former POTUS' middle name to be amusing.

Because you missed that I actually quoted another person being named as well. And I don't have an obsession with Obama's middle name, I just find it amusing how it makes proggies jump and squeal. It's my guilty pleasure.

BTW, if it makes you feel any better they also tried to use W's face, but the sheep kept getting him confused with Mortimer Snerd.

Fair enough, but I'm pretty sure that's George WALKER Bush and Mortimer JASPER Snerd to you. I think both dummies would appreciate the respect of a proper address.

Maybe the "can't spot a familiar face" problem in sheep is related to the "can't spot a con man" problem with Trumpsters...

This is great. We can transplant the high performing sheep brains into humans.
