Kerry win could bring contracting job losses

The Democratic presidential candidate wants to cut the number of jobs federal agencies contract out to private-sector firms. By eliminating 100,000 contractor jobs, Kerry estimates a savings to the federal government of $50 billion over 10 years.

Government contractors see Kerry's proposal as a political payoff to federal employee unions, which strongly support his candidacy.

Kerry, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee , has fought to increase small businesses' share of federal contracts in the past.

But Kerry's pledge "will be impossible to monitor," he adds, because contractors do not provide head counts to the government

"He's playing to his constituency," says Stan Soloway, president of the Professional Services Council, a trade group representing government contractors. "It's election-year politicking."
