On this matter I would not make the information we have against this man public. Instead, I would give it to the Iraqi government and they can decide his fate. Of course, there is no telling whether the evidence is real of not.
Why bother at all? Because it is likely that an informant inside a terrorist organization gave up this man?s name. To keep the informant in play, we?d have to conceal the reason for holding this journalist. This sort of theory means we?d have to keep what we know away from the public, so any checks and balances would have to be made with other trusted authorities.
Aren't you usually against government encroachment and absolute power. Don't you see how ridiculous the bolded sounds?
Iraq is not the United States.
Iraq is a war zone, people are dying in droves. The US and Iraqi militaries are working around the clock to combat an active terrorist presence. You cannot apply American civil liberties to a war zone and expect to live. It?s a dog eat dog situation over there.
Over here in the United States, we should thank god that we don?t live in such a situation. I expect our government to treat US citizens with civil liberties. I also expect us to do everything necessary to win any wars we are engaged in. Sometimes those interests can conflict, but in this specific case, in Iraq, I do not have a conflict.
As far as this specific person is concerned, the answer to this problem is that we shouldn?t even be involved in the first place. Turn him over to the Iraqis.
