Another interesting article: we donated a billion dollars to Seti@home :O

Another article I found for DC Paradise. 😀

Using parameters above, SETI@Home performed a multi-billion dollar computation for a million dollars - a very good deal!
SETI@Home harvested more than a million CPU years worth more than a billion dollars. It sent out a billion jobs of 1/2 MB each. This petabyte of network bandwidth cost about a million dollars. The SETI@Home peers donated a billion dollars of "free" CPU time and also donated 10^12 watt-hours which is about 100M$ of electricity. The key property of SETI@Home is that the ComputeCost:NetworkCost ratio is 10,000:1. It is very CPU-intensive.

Didn't know we donated that much money to Seti@Home. 😉

I'm writing off about $300,000 on my taxes. Non-profit organization, gift of services. I'll just use creative billing !!

Whenever I find a really interesting article, I'll post it here. 🙂

Am also making a backup of all the articles I find in PDF format as soon as I find them, in case some are removed from the internet.

Hehe.. creative accounting Jon. 🙂 Just start at the bottom with what you want to get back, and work your way up. 😉 :Q

PeterN, could you do me a favor and make that 1012 a 10^12, obviously FuseTalk didn't like the superscript 😉

Wow, thats alot of power...my calculation can't be correct...10 trillion watt hours? (10,000,000,000,000 watt hours)

I think 10^12 = 1,000,000,000,000 = 1 trillion. Still alot!
That always confused me, 10^12 is a 1 followed by 12 zeros & not 10 followed by 12 zeros. Some one correct me if i'm wrong.

Yeah that sounds right ,I think!😱 ,bloody stupid system if you ask me ,why don't they just do the logical thing? ,like 1^12 if its got 12 zeroes!

I was thinking the same thing. 😀 😀

Yeah.... I thought of the same thing myself. Matter of fact I started a sep thread about writting off donated computer time tho no one seemed to care... I think I am gonna run this buy my accountant and see what he says. I'll report back later what the results were ...Tho, I'm not getting my hopes up high tho, I could provide bills for computers and what not.

Too bad SETI doesn't have a DONATION form to fill out. I know they do when you give them $$ but, why don't they have some sort of simple form for completing work units? Tho, if they just came up with an average even tho.......... Power is billed out diffrently from state to state... Right Smoke???

That's not the way I heard it... Gateway said they would RENT the computers out to anyone willing to pay for extra CPU cycles... I doubt any FREE DC projects will be running to sign up for that....

Oh-I am sorry if it sounded like the gateway computers would be run for DC... i know its a pay-service as the link shows 😉

Still neat!
