I'm looking into getting a laptop that can run HD movies w/o stuttering on my hdtv. my old dell d610 w/ a radeon x300 couldn't handle that.

what's the bare minimum laptop graphics card that could handle that? how are experiences w/ intel x3100 graphics ?

Well, depending on what you define HD as... my GMA950 can handle 720P without an issue, but staggers on 1080P.
 
If the GMA950 can handle 720P, I'm sure the X3100 will work very well with 1080P as the X3100 is much better than the GMA950.

If you're really worried about getting something with integrated graphics, look for something with a the low-end DX10 cards from ATI or Nvidia, as those will easily handle HD output.
