We don?t need oil, the U.S. needs more refineries to convert the oil to gasoline, that?s the problem. There hasn?t been a new refinery built here in 20 years.

The refinery situation in the US is terrible.

You would think that under G.W.'s anti-environmental/pro-oil cartel policies more refineries would be in the works. Maybe they are? Or is it that there is no incentive to build new refineries because this country lacks a clearly defined energy policy?

Damn - no public transportation OR dentists. Sucks to live there I guess... 😀

You suck!

Anyways.. I drive abotu 70 miles round trip to work everyday. Its hitting me and my full size dodge truck hard right now 🙁

I am spending about $60 week on gas.

Whine whine whine you waste more money on junk that you don't even want every week than you waste on gas going up 15 cents. Wow, it cost an extra 2.00 to fill up, big f'in deal. I never understood why people whine about gas so much. If you have a big SUV, what the hell did you expect, gas was going to be cheap? If you have an economy car, gas is still cheap. Maybe if it jumped from 1.00 to 2.00 or 2.00 to 3.00 that is something to complain about otherwise I don't see the big deal. Get a bicycle if you are so upset.

What the hell are you whining at, gas costs here $3.50/gallon ("premium" is $4/gallon) and average salary is $6000/year 🙁

What is an SC and why would you even waste putting 93 octane in a vehicle (pardon my ignorance)?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that drives an 86 accord. lol

Whoo hoo I found the thread again 😀
Absurd. Take away predators and the grazing population of mammals (let's use deer) will over graze and eat their surrounding resources until there is a huge starvation and death cycle.

ALL mammals will breed and feed until they use up their resources and die off, or are killed by predators. They do not possess some superior knowledge or instinct that tells them to stop breeding or using resources.
You're right, but humans have no natural predator. With deer if they are lucky enough to find an area devoid of predators they will blow up and overfeed, then die en masse, but in most cases most aspects of nature are controlled. You have a fairly good mix of predators to prey and vegeation. Lacking a natural predator, and having the means to master the environment as humans have, they have a particular ability to grow with little concern for lack of food or resources (at least for now).
Humans LIVE where they breed and feed. We have migrated just like ANY OTHER MAMMAL... that is, we have gone where we could when the means arrived. There are no great human waste lands that we have left behind to populate new areas, as we populate everyplace we have gone.
As Eli mentioned, a city is exactly that - an ecological wasteland. As humans grow animals and wildlife and vegetation grow. I've seen it in my neighborhood, we've seen it with buffalo. You can see it in rain forests.
Were such a bullsh!t theory true, Africa, Europe and the East would be one huge waste land incapable of supporting life. The opposite is true.
They're simply not very good at it. Western cultures are successful and can really master the environment and resources to a greater degree.
Skoorb, using movies as a source of philosophy is bad enough, but using such blatant bullsh!t is even worse. It is impossible to debate something with someone who has such irrational beliefs spoon fed to them by popular culture.
The statement from the movie asserted something I already felt, not the other way around. I can't believe that somebody from a movie has never said anything you agree with.

Anyhoo, I still maintain that humans are essentially incapable of conserving on a grand scale. As long as they can find an excsuse not to, and the result of their immediate consumption is not immediately known (such as with the environment), they will not conserve. For God's sake, most people can't even conserve their own spending, which is why so many are in debt and retire without savings. How can we expect these people, who are but slaves to their own greed and letting life take them for a ride, expect to embrace a more debatable topic such as the environment and do what's right? We can't. Sadly, as with the tragedy of the commons (which you called communist simply because you didn't agree with it, oblivious to the fact that it's a well documented psycholgical phenomenon), you kind of need everybody on board if you want to achieve the real possibility of conservation.

currently ~$2.30/gal for the cheapest grade gas here. (2 days ago)
was ~1.65/gal 12 months ago

After reading the first two and the fifth pages, I noticed some trends...

Those thinking hybrids are a long term solution to fuel pricing should also consider the issue of battery replacement. New batteries are fairly expensive ($2000-5000 range), and need to be replaced about once every five years. Depending on fuel pricing, gas prices, and driving patterns, the hybrid solution may or may not be economically beneficial; but will certainly be ecologically beneficial. (This was discussed in another thread; but I can't find it for the life of me)

Gas pricing's single greatest factor is oil production, which is regulated entirely by the OPEC, a cartel. What they do is outside the absolute control of any administration. (Not that I'm personally a fan of Bush; I'm voting for Kerry since I feel he is the lesser of two evils...) Anyway, for a nice guide on gas pricing, check http://money.howstuffworks.com/gas-price.htm.

For those of the "it's no big deal" mindset concerning gas pricing, see the economists's posts. Also consider that many people simply lack the wherewithal to balance their finances in order to create savings. These people likely contribute to the overall economy in the form of consumption. Recent studies have found that people are already making the financial substitution between groceries and gas. Continued penny pinching in the areas of entertainment and leisure is certain. That $68/month (or other quoted figure) certainly doesn't detract from an individual's decision to make a spending splurge here and there. If consumer spending were to suddenly back off, this economy could be headed for another recession...

And to the few who still think energy is plentiful, refer to this http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=38&threadid=1297990 about what options we have for energy when we run out of oil. In short, nobody has discovered anything that is as versatile (energy, plastics, lubricant, etc), easy-to-use (in terms of transportation and processing), or profitable as oil. We have time to find something that fits the bill, but that time is limited. Wind and hydroelectric are the two most promising environmentally friendly options, with nuclear being the other option.

For the record, I try to be environmentally minded whenever possible; but I'm not about to protest or pay a hefty premium to satisfy my conscience...

Just my $.02.

BTW, Eli sums up the the other ATOT thread very well in his post. IDK how to make a direct link to his post though. (and my view source has ceased to function, so I can't readily tell if it's even possible...)
