Rebooted to change BIOS settings, could not load anything after that.

Changed FSB from 142 to 133 just in case, but no go.
I can hear the disk rotating, churning away.

Second time it has happened - same drive. First I overclocked to 148FSB and it would not post so had to reinstall OS. After that I didn't bother going too high.

What do you think my chances of RMA it???
It was a OEM disk and I have not got any info.

Has anyone tried the Maxtor ATA133 yet??

Haven't you ever considered that heat might be an issue? Did your 60GXP have any active cooling at all? What kind of case was this system in?

I'm just curious as to why they fail. I have a whole bunch of them.

I think I will go for that one. I remember reading a review with these against the IBM 60GXP (fastest ATA100) and it was right up with it. This was using a standard ATA100 cable.

I see best price in UK I can find

I can't understand why it failed as well.
I have an Antec SX840 case with 4 case fans and system temps constant 23c.
I had no fan on the HD but I just ran the IBM Feature tool and it picks it up fine, ran some temperature tests and it didn't get too high.

I just get 'A Disk read error occurred' when trying to load OS.

Hmmm...that's pretty strange...the Antec SX8x0's are very good cases and they are sufficiently cooled.
Generally speaking though, you should ALWAYS have active cooling on an IBM drive. The IBM drives heat up significantly more than others, and the fact that they have to cool down constantly damages the drives.

Sorry to hear about the failure...can you get IBM to replace it?

Fortunately I have been using it for only 4 weeks roughly and I always put data onto CD's, so no data loss at all.
The only thing really annoying is I was getting to the end of Serious Sam. Have to start all from beginning!!

I will certainly try to RMA it. I bought it OEM so didn't get any documents at all.
What do you think my chances are if I find address on web site??

I think that IBM has a policy against RMAing OEM drives... :(

I know that it was the case with the 75GXP series. SUX

Something is funky. I have a few 60GXPs also. No failures. I run my system 150 FSB without issue. The drive is also fine @ 160 FSB (but my nic doesn't like it).

maybe I was just unlucky.
PC had been running for nearly 1 week, but system temps were good.

I have tryed knocking it slightly and it is currently in the Freezer for about 1 hour as I have heard techys do this and it has worked after.
