I currently have a
Dell deminsion 8300 series computer with

p4 2.0ghz
512 pc2100 ram + 256mb pc2700ram
SB Live! value
intel corp mobo
ATI 9700tx vid card.

Would i see a big improvement in gaming with:

AMD 2400+ mobile (45watt)
NF7 (not -S)
Soundblaster live
512 pc3200
ATI 9700tx vid card (would swap vid cards)

I am running far cry and doom 3 fine right now but i have a really good offer to trade my older XP system plus some cash for the AMD system as per above. (PM me for details about the trade.)

Would i see a noticable increase in gaming?

Thanks
Paul

I doubt you'll notice a difference. Yes the AMD mobile will OC and can be faster than the P4 but the new system still only has 512mb of ram. If you could afford a second 512mb stick then I would consider it a better idea.

also, with a good cpu like that, it seems like a good idea to hold off on upgrading till the amd athlon 64 2800+ drops down a little, then you could carry your gfx card over, along with things like HDD and what not

if your planning on overclocking then yes it would be a decent increase in performance but if not then its not worth it. like crxican said today's game really like the ram and 1 gb would prolly be more of a benefit.

If you have to ask, it's probably not worth it IMO. Even with an overclock, i think your best bet is to hold on to your money a little longer since, as you said, the system is holding up just fine for Doom3 etc. Even with an overclock on the 2400+ i don't think it warrants to upgrade.

Ok, thanks guys. Basicly the AMD would become my primary gaming computer and the dell would become my families work computer/gaming server. I was going to trade an 1800+, ABIT KT7A-Raid, 512 pc133 and 90 dollars for the set up, but like you guys say A64 is just around the courner of being cost fiesable for me (i live in canada). Thanks for the input guys and for saving me a hundred bucks.
