Nothing wring with the general hacker mindset. It's how some things get created and how things are made better.

Some people do it just to see if they can
Some people do it for money. (good or bad)
Some people are mistakenly called hackers by the masses that only use tools real hackers put together. These people are asshole script kiddies and i wish the media would learn the difference.

If I may offer, what, for me, is an important distinction (you actually started going there in your list): there is a world of difference between some genius nerd who can write code, dismantle code, hack code or whatever all that is....being psychologically whole enough to make positive contributions to technology moving forward.....and someone with those chops who is acting out negatively.

As I always say: it's not where you go, it's WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM and what a given endeavor is being used in service of.

I think this statement explains why macs exist at all. There are many people who will actually buy a new computer rather than fix the current one. Even if all it needs is a few startup programs disabled, a basic disk cleanup, and maybe an upgrade to an SSD. But why do that when you can shell out $1000? $2000? chump change. They will even go as far as to work it into their subconscious, by spilling coffee or accidentally destroying it in some other way. Anything to spend more money!

The above....open and shut TRUE!:'( Cept, among my friend, they text ME. Fixing friends' systems for fun is just that: fun. Always unplanned. Also grows chops over time. But sadly, I also fire up with happiness, and try to show them to ignite and empower them......these are smart humans, pls know that.....and always get, "I don wanna know, just pls fix it!"

It's less, the people you allude to are rich or profligate, than it is they are convinced they must remain afraid and helpless.I have almost given up erupting into my cheerleader mode, re SIT DOWN, THIS IS AMAZING, U WILL LOVE THIS, YOU CAN LEARN THIS; it's so fun!!!! I will show you!!!!

Heartbreaking.🙁
