Another "Help Me Decide What Motherboard/RAM" Thread...

Sorry to bother with a "Help Me Decide <insert some PC component here>" thread, I know people post these types of threads a lot. 😛 However, I need help and expertise from my fellow AT members. I've been thinking about building a new PC (my current PC is showing its age in current games). Lately, I've been quite impressed with the OC performance of the Mobile Athlon XP Bartons that a lot of people have been talking about recently, so I've decided to build a PC equipped with a Mobile Athlon XP Barton. I already have most of the other computer components already taken care of; I just need to find the best motherboard and RAM for some moderate OCing on a Mobile Athlon XP.
Reading from several popular message boards (including here), it seems that the ABIT NF7-S & DFI NFII Infinity/Lanparty seem to be the best motherboards for OCing a mobile Athlon XP Barton. (Quick question: About the Infinity & Lanparty, is there a large difference in performance between them? Enough to warrant spending an extra ~$50?) Which of these motherboards would you suggest, or is there another I should also be looking at? As for RAM, I'm totally clueless on which brand I should get. What brand would be the best for this configuration? Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

EDIT: Oh, forgot, for total system RAM, I'm looking at 1 GB of RAM for this PC.

DFI NFII Infinity/Lanparty are basically the same. You get another NIC with lanparty and those god aweful colors.

However looking at the IC's on the board and specs they are identical.

As far as choosing between Abit and DFI Ultra infinity they are both great.

I lean twards DFI Ultra infinity and I own the Abit.

-$10 cheaper
-Passive cooling on north bridge for quietness.

The only reason I choose Abit was location of power connectors on DFI is in two different places for more clutter and cpu slot was further back than I like.. basically I like the board layout of abit better so I got it and put a passive cooler on nothbridge.

I spend some time researching this. From what I read I went with the NF7-S and some Mushkin level 1 PC3500. There is virtually no difference in performance between the two boards at stock speeds. The NF7-S reportedly is a much better overclocker though and the Lanparty 2 has an assload of features...that's what you pay the extra $50 for. That and UV reactive PCI slots. I do not know if there is any difference between how either of htem would overclock the CPU per-se but my guess would bethat Abit has the advantage there.

Thanks for the suggestions, I've decided to go with the DFI NFII Ultra Infinity motherboard and Mushkin PC3500 1 GB (2x512 MB) Level One DDR-SDRAM. Now begins the long wait for the parts 😀.

So far, I've been just looking at the long stickied thread at OCForums.com. Is there any other great guides/stickied threads on Mobile Barton OC'ing at sites or message boards that I should be looking at?

There is an enormous thread here on the matter in the Hot Deals forum. Try a search for 2500 or mobile.

Actually, there are 2 or 3 different mobile Barton threads on the OC forum here, also. You don't even have to search for them, at the moment. Here's a link to one of them: link.
