Wow, I really do feel sorry for these people especially the women. Can you imagine having to worry about your mom, your sister, cousin or aunt, or niece in a country like this? It has to be maddening.

A WOMAN was raped, forced to drink acid then dragged to her death in yet another sickening assault — just days after the murder of two cousins once again put the spotlight on India’s epidemic of sexual violence.

Yet even as Westerners and parts of Indian society condemned the ongoing horror, the reality on the gorund was quite different: women protesting the issue were driven back by water cannon and police, among them a number of female officers.

In the latest incident, The Times of India cites a post-mortem report of the death of a 20-year-old woman whose naked body was found lying disfigured in a field in the district of Baheri, Uttar Pradesh state, at the weekend.
The autopsy report says the victim had been tied and dragged over the ground with a plastic rope which had strangled her.

Her face had been heavily disfigured by acid and her identity is yet to be determined.

Police say they believe up to five men may have been involved in the attack, but that there is no evidence as yet of gang rape. No suspects have yet been identified.

he attack has shocked the Bareilly region already reeling after recent attacks, with demonstrations spurred by the lack of information and arrests.
The acid-burned body was found just days after another attack which saw two teen girls raped and murdered. The cousins, aged 14 and 15, were left hanging from a mango tree.

Police yesterday used water cannons to disperse hundreds of women who were protesting against the rise in violence against women in the northern Indian state.

The protesters in *******, the capital of Uttar Pradesh state, were demonstrating outside the office of the top elected official, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, demanding that he crack down on an increasing number of rape and other attacks on women and girls.

Hundreds of police officers, including female officers, pushed and shoved the protesters before deploying water cannons to disperse them.
The protesters also demanded that the government curb police indifference, which they said was encouraging attacks on women.

Police failed to take any action when the father of one of the girls reported to police that the two cousins were missing. Two police officers were fired for dereliction of duty after the girls were found gang-raped and killed.
One of their fathers said police took more than 12 hours to respond to his report that the girls were missing. He said if the police had acted promptly, they could have been rescued.

Yadav has recommended a federal inquiry, but his government has been widely accused of a lackadaisical approach toward women’s safety.
India has a long history of tolerance of sexual violence, but the attack on the girls has caused outrage across the nation.

Activists and ordinary people said it was as if nothing had changed since the December 2012 fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old woman aboard a moving bus in New Delhi, India’s capital.
The nationwide outcry following that attack led the federal government to push through legislation doubling prison terms for rapists to 20 years and criminalising voyeurism, stalking and the trafficking of women. The law also makes it a crime for officers to refuse to register cases when complaints are made.

Three cheers for all the dunces who insist we're getting accurate rape statistics from this part of the world.

"Look how rosy the numbers are!"

It's having a heart and a mind that acknowledges, accepts, values, and even celebrates the various ways that people live and interact in the world. It's answering the question, "What is cultural diversity?" with a warm and caring heart that realizes that - even with our various cultural differences - we all aspire to many of the same things: security, well-being, acceptance, individualism, esteem, and some form of equity, whether it's physical, spiritual or emotional.

Cultural diversity, or multiculturalism, is based on the idea that cultural identities should not be discarded or ignored, but rather maintained and valued.

Yeah diversity!

These atrocities will continue until:

1) The authorities get tough with the apprehension and sentencing of the men responsible

2) Community, government and religious leaders institute effective campaigns to put and end to the misogynistic attitude and the "boys will be boys" excuse.

Except it appears the issue is more of caste than gender.

"Can there be any justice for the low-caste people like us? Do we always have to live and be treated like animals?” asks Lilawati, a neighbor of one of the murdered girls.

The father of one of the girls stood motionless in a corner of his ramshackle house. He only opened up only when the debate veered to whether justice would be done in his daughter's case.

"Two policemen took part in the assault. I pleaded to the senior officials to arrest them but they didn't listen to me. Justice is not meant for us. Dalits are treated like dogs," he told DW, adding that had the police acted swiftly after his daughter went missing, she could have been saved.

Of course talking about caste issues doesn't play into the whole "war against women" agenda.

Please show us your statistics that demonstrate that Dalit men are being abused in the same numbers and with the same brutality as Dalit women.

You'll say anything, won't you, to discredit any notion that women in many societies are treated like sub-humans? And all because you hate yourself because you can't control your desire for a gay lover.

Why do I need to provide statistics to counter your anecdotal evidence?

And it wouldn't prove anything either. Women are easier targets. If you want to go beat up some Dalit's women are the obvious choice.

But the motivation is still the fact that they are Dalit's not that they are women. And so approaching it as a violence against women issue is silly and clearly motivated by a larger ideology.

You mean like bringing up the fact that there is a caste of people in India that essentially are considered sub-human?

And that these people experience higher levels of violence and that there might be a connection?

That's India for you. Maybe if our American women got sprayed with the ol' water hose every time they got into a crazed feminist rant they would learn to be a little more grateful for all they have here.

Again, why are you arguing so desperately that this is a "Dalit" issue and not a "Dalit woman's" issue? You're unable to provide any evidence that Dalit men are targeted for what amounts to torture and murder like Dalit girls are, yet you insist that the gender of the victim is irrelevant.

Perhaps you should try reading the article I linked:

Are you suggesting you have a greater understanding of Indian culture than the Indian father of one of the murdered girls?

You're repeating yourself. Saying that Dalit's can't get justice in no way discredits the argument that Dalit girls are being targeted.

The first day of this year took Maharashtra down to a new low. Adding to the growing list of atrocities against Dalits, three young men were killed, allegedly by a mob of upper caste men to keep their family’s honour intact. One of those killed was in love with the daughter of an upper caste farmer, who is among those accused.

The matter was allegedly suppressed by the authorities for almost a month and the murders came to light only after a hard-fought battle by the brother of one of the victims.

Seems awfully similar. Wonder why this wasn't worldwide news?

man that's crazy... Previously these types of issues were probably hushed up but at leats now they are coming up in the media and a shitstorm is kicked up and hopefully the perpetrators are castrated and fed to wolves.
