Yet, if he were a 30 year old female that looked like a Barbie Doll we'd all be snickering.

BINGO!

Don't you just love partisan, homophobic sexism cloaked as moral outrage?

A rash of female teachers fsck the brains out of their teenage male students and everyone here has little more than a wink and a smile while fondly remembering unlived childhood fantasies. But a man talks dirty to a male teenager, and they're ready to lynch him.

Gee, can you say hypocritical double standard? I knew that you could.
Do you really think the reaction would be any different if the pages were teenage girls instead of boys?

Yeah.

The reaction would be much different if it was a female politician and a 16yo male page.

Wow, was that really amused, or just a parody?

Want hypocritical? Here. And here:
STATEMENT OF ATTORNEY GENERAL JOHN ASHCROFT ON THE PASSAGE OF THE SMITH-POMEROY-FOLEY CHILD OBSCENITY AND PORNOGRAPHY PREVENTION ACT

"I am pleased that the House of Representatives passed the Child Obscenity and Pornography Prevention Act, a bill that will strengthen the ability of law enforcement to protect children from abuse and exploitation. I urge the Senate to bring this important legislation to the floor as soon as possible.

"I want to thank Chairman Sensenbrenner for guiding this important legislation through the Judiciary Commitee, and Congressmen Lamar Smith, Mark Foley, and Earl Pomeroy for their leadership on this bill. They have worked tirelessly to protect the health and safety of children.

"The Department of Justice remains solid in its commitment to identify, investigate, and prosecute those who sexually exploit children. I look forward to working with Congress to see to it that this legislation becomes law, so that we may continue in our efforts to eliminate child pornography and prosecute offenders."

Well, the doj wasn't hot to prosecute a republican congressman who sexually exploits children. The FBI new about this months ago and did nothing about it. God, you're a wackjob, Amused.

Ok, that's nice, but I'm trying to make a point here. I don't disagree with Amused's remarks about the uproar obviously being mostly politically motivated. I do, however, object to his usage of "homophobic sexism." That is the reason for the particular hypothetical situation I presented. Partisan rancor trumps any homophobic tendencies, every day of the week. You would see the exact same reaction from the people and the press if Foley was heterosexual and emails and IMs of a similar tone between him and a 16 year old female page surfaced.

Yeah, I do think the reactions would have been different. You would have had those snide, "Wow...what a playa," and "Yet Another Benefit to Being A Congressman" comments. It just grosses people out because Foley was hitting on another dude.

Those type of people will exist regardless, take a look at aidanjm's thoughts on the actual situation for a homosexual parallel.

What the fsck does that have to do with what I'm talking about? Nothing. If anything, your strawman merely proves my point.

Yes. And you know it would be too.

Here is the order of outrage from most to least and only proves how homophobic and sexist society is when it comes to these matters:

Male/teen male
Female/teen female
Male/teen female
female/teen male

In the case of the last one, you would have reactions as humorous and forgiving as you had with the recent teacher/student cases. Guys everywhere would be winking to each other and saying "why didn't that ever happen to me?" and "Hot for teacher!" etc...

Anyone who tries to claim there is no homophobia behind this outrage is merely denying relality... and their own prejudice.

Anyone who tries to claim this isn't driven by partisanship as well is also denying reality.

The female teachers REPEATEDLY fscked their teenage male students, and the outrage NEVER approached the outrage being expressed here over a male congressman simply talking dirty to a male teen who never tells him to stop.

You need to move Female/teen female to the bottom of your list, like so:

Male/teen male
Male/teen female
female/teen male
Female/teen female

And I think the top two are tied.

I think it has more to do with the fact that it was an adult male than that it was a homosexual. People view adult males as being more able to victimize a young person than an adult female, and a young female as more likely to be victimized. I don't know if those two things are true, but I do believe that's how many people perceive it.

Well, OK. But that's the sexism I was talking about. I would still say the outrage would be, and is, more intense over a male/teen male situation than a male/teen female situation.

At any rate, you get my point. There is a huge discrepancy between reaction to cases very similar... with the teacher cases being FAR more egregious because actual, repeated sexual contact took place, yet the reaction to the teacher's cases was not only mild, but almost approving.

Yes, you're right. I agree.

In the teacher cases it also depends a lot on how hot the teacher was.
