Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The high res texture pack takes up 123mb of memory, according to the developers. That's why I experience choppiness on my mid range rig, w/ a p4 3ghz and radeon 9800 pro. The devs told me I need a 256mb model to really run the game *great*.

I still wish they gave us 1280x1024, so I could run my LCD at native. Although even if the game could, I don't think my computer could handle it. Big battles get choppy @ 1280x960, 4xAA 16xAF.

Anyways, heads up to those looking for a new vid card. I might have to get myself an nvidia 5950 for christmas. I still have this freakin nvidia casebadge on my case... heh.

I used to be a big Nvidia fan, but have been swayed to the Dark Side! Please don't buy a 5950, spend a little more and get the 9800XT, or even the 9600XT (for $200 bones). You won't be sorry. Scratch that Nvidia applique off, or slap an ATI over it.

Seriously, the devs said so :|

with all the memory tricks that the video card makers pull, im sure 128mb is PLENTY for ANY game at the moment or in the forseeable future

Then turn off the AA and AF, You'll get a crap load of performance then.

Go and get a 5950, they rock. - Just look at how cool the heatsink looks.

I would think it's the AA and AF, turn them off. Also, 5950 is better then 9800XT, so definatly get that if you want preformance

A. What do you care if he buys a 5950?
B. Why would you recommend to a a guy that already has a 9800Pro that he buy a 9600XT? Don't you think he'd notice the huge drop in performance?

Do you have a funny bone Reg, I still think the heatsink looks really cool. 5950 Ultra has better image quality while beating 9800 XT at half of the tests. And better compatibility.

EDIT: cancel the Image Quality. It's up for grabs.

.... Generally when one 'upgrades' you step up, not down. That 9800 Pro > 9600XT might be kinda hard on me.

As far as compatibility, anyone playing KOTOR on an ATI card can see the glitches and various other problems (virtually unplayable on 9600s due to crash bugs) that the game wants an NVIDIA card. None of the NVIDIA people (except those with 5200s, lepers) have any problems, and they get way better performance, just like in Jedi Academy. I think Bioware has proven time and again that NVIDIA is the way it's meant to be played (NWN, and it's sequels.)

Aside from Jedi Academy, and KOTOR, I haven't had any compatibility problems w/ my 9800 Pro. But those are two of the best games of the year, so it's kind of a big deal.

My only problem is, my 9800 Pro has a heatpipe w/ op1 fan. I'd need a replacement to be as quiet, and I don't think that 5950 is a 'case whisperer.'

3GHz + 9800pro = mid-range rig??? Whoa.
128MB will be enough for a few years more, considering the solid 1-2% performance boost of the 256MB cards today.
I talked to someone recently who wanted to persuade me that his FX5600 256MB is better than the 9700pro which has only 128MB...
Maybe you should turn that 16xAF and 4xAA off and get a 30-50% performance boost. Why do you need AA at 1280X1024, anyway?

So actually, it doesn't want a 256MB graphics card, it just has glitches and issues in ATi cards and performs better on nVidia hardware.

So the title of your post is really a bit irrelevant.
And have you tried lowering the AA/AF settings?

I need 256MB card because:
That's why I experience choppiness on my mid range rig, w/ a p4 3ghz and radeon 9800 pro

Then later:
anyone playing KOTOR on an ATI card can see the glitches and various other problems

So do you need a 256MB card or not?
